2010 Womens European Skeet championships - youtube
      #223144 - 08/01/13 02:57 PM

As I move closer towards retirement I have decided to take up clay target shooting again. I did a bit in my late teens and early 20s however girlfriends, wife and kids, and weekly work travel killed that.

I shot DTL before however I have always wanted to try skeet so that is what I have just started - a lot to learn !!

I checked to see what was on youtube and among other things found this. It is Olympic skeet which looks an order of magnitude harder than what I am doing. Some good photography and good introduction to the sport included with some nice graphics here and there.

These ladies can shoot. As an extra incentive to check it out some of them are quite tidy as well.

Rick

Only shot skeet once, with a fellow's full choke M870 - lots of fun even though I did drop 3 or 4 - HA! - or was it 4 or 5?. Man - it's quick and close. I was shooting PITA at the time - mid 70's, but that Skeet - it's a harder game.

Skeet is one I still need to try. Lately I've spent most of my time on the 5 Stand and have recently started shooting Sporting Clays.

International skeet is a very demanding sport. One of the most difficult features is the requirement to keep the butt stock of the shotgun in contact with the sooter's hip bone until the target appears. Since there is up to a three second delay between the command from the shooter and the time the target is released, the shooter has to react to the target, not the other way around.

With the target flying around 100 mph there is no room for error in gun mounting. The gun has to come up the same way every time and the cheek to stock contact has to be identical to assure a successful shot.

This is ideal practice for unexpected tight situations in the game field. My charging rhino was just like a low house target shot from station three.

I shot my first round of skeet today, it was fun, International looks to be way over my head though. It will make for a nice warmup run before hitting the sporting clays course.
