Would never want to own a gun with some old git engraved on it...

I suppose if Manrico Torcolli was to engrave Charlize Theron in the nude on it, that would be acceptable!

hahaha....everyone to their own taste Mike.

How to ruin what was a great gun when a nice labrador, game scene or scroll would have in "my mind" been far more tasteful.

Reminds me of the Margaret Thatcher Purdey K.Hunt engraved gun which was recently up for auction at Holts, no one wanted to own that, either! Did not sell ..Did not make reserve!

"The gun is estimated at £30,000-£50,000, but is likely to fetch far more" yeah right!

Special gun should have special engarvings. If not, it wouldn´t be special anymore. IMO gunmaker in his workshop is good motif for engraving a special shotgun. Different kind of animals you could see 13 times in dozen.

Sir, I am not going to enter a battle of wits with an unarmed opponent, the Margeret Thatcher gun is a completely different job, she was a politician who you either lover or hated thus the engraving is "difficult"...not so in this case, best, Mike

Mr. Bailey

One may understand taste as merely a set of personal preferences, over which external adjudication—or perhaps any adjudication—is inappropriate.

No battle of wits is necessary, this is not a court of law, this is a public forum, where you get a chance to post your views and I get an equal chance to post mine.

On this subject we can only conclude that your personal taste differs greatly from mine.

However, I think we can probably both agree that Phil Coggan is an excellent engraver.

James

Mr normann

This Gun is to celebrate the Boss o/u's 200 yars in excistence. The idea is obviusly to portray the creator of the gun. To mee it is as good as any other way to Mark the ocation. And the engraving quality is on par as well.

How would you see they should celebrated their bicentenery?

Hi Morten

Firstly Boss was started by Thomas Boss in 1812 after he had finished his apprenticeship at Joseph Manton, the worlds best gunmaker, so if Boss really wants to celebrate a bicentenary (200 years celebration) then perhaps they should base their bicentenary gun on the man who started the business. I understand Mr. Roberts played a very important part in Boss's history, but if the bicentenary was to celebrate him then you would have to wait until 2091, as he first joined the company in 1891.

Therefore I do not understand why Mr. Robertson is engraved on the gun, as he only represents a relatively small part (although important part ) of Boss's history. If Boss absolutely had to feature someone on the base plate then perhaps Thomas Boss would have been more fitting.

I have owned several guns over the years with human portraits engraved on them and generally I find them very difficult to sell. As Mr. Mike Bailey posted earlier, you either love or hate the person engraved on the gun, so its back to personal choice. For this reason I would not have chosen to put anyones portrait on the gun.

That said, Mr. Coggan did an excellent job of the engraving and this is one of the best portraits I ever saw engraved on a gun other than those of naked women on the fantasy art guns engraved by Manrico Torcoli or Fracassi.

So to answer your question, to represent Boss's 200 years I would have chosen a more regency style / Georgian style / neo-classic stlye of engraving - something which portrayed elegance and lightness of touch. Perhaps a Rococo style with deep chiseled panels coved in a layer of detailed gold lattice. Classicism was the most fashionable style in Britain during the Regency period. Forms and motifs from ancient Greece and Rome were the basis of the style. To these were added elements taken from nature, from the arts of ancient Egypt and from French design of the mid-18th century. The combination of different patterns and colours made Regency Classicism a visually rich style.

For Boss's bicentenary gun I would have focused on this visually rich style, something of extra ordinary quality, which reflected the period 200 years ago, and 200 years of history, and not on a combination of deep scroll and bulino engraving, which looks to me like the work on an Italian Rossini!

Nordmann, I couldn´t agree more with your comment on people being engraved on guns, the Hollands ordered by Eric Clapton with him sitting under a tree with a guitar proved a difficult sell when he asked them to offload them or rather asked Holts,(if they ever sold) and I am not a fan of bulino (animals or people) since I prefer case hardening and traditional engraving but this Boss gun I doubt will ever be sold. I think it will go into their collection but that is just a guess. best, Mike

As a matter of interest, I currently have a pair of the highest quality 20 gauge Boss "style" 0/U barreled actions in the white, complete with 30 inch barrels, so should anyone be interested in having a fabulous pair of bespoke guns built to their own specifications then I am open to serious offers.

2 actions with all internal dimensions, ready for hand jointing & finishing, with 30" barrels brazed & lapped, ready for ribs & jointing.

2 side-lock kits ready for hand fitting & cosmetic shaping.

Trigger plates & triggers for either single or double trigger guns

The actions come with fore-end irons, with Boss style extended bars, top levers, spindles, bolts, trunnions, safety springs, safety catches, etc.

Furthermore I have access to the finest specialist craftsmen in London capable of undertaking the various tasks required to complete these guns to exhibition quality.

Serious enquiries only by PM or mail.
