Exactly - & on a gun that kicks some.

I've seen them on the 3/8" eye relief Immersive scopes on non-recoiling air rifles to eliminate side light into the sight picture.
There was one on the 1-40 Immersive scope I purchased for my Condor .25., however I dislike them and took it off. I prefer not to have the rubber eye-cup.
The ocular lens cover has written on it "NON RECOILING RIFLES ONLY"

rigby mauser in .275 rigby, scope is rigby but comes form another rifle, must be fitted into the scope mount

the wedge was a relict from the old muzzle loader when this was the common method to fix the barrel in the stock. more or less common on new rifles up to the great war than disappear between the wars into nirvana.

I asked if it was functional, due to normal double guard (action) screws.
I do not see it as an improvement, visually, or functionally is all, I guess.

This is one of 10 different rifles made to commemorate 10 various battles of the Anglo Boer war. No two are the same. Truly RARE. Made in 1986 as per the date on the barrel. Serial number for this rifle is “03” in calibre 7x57; 28inch tapered octagonal barrel; near new bore; wedge mounted and key adjustable blade front sight, tangent rear sight with graduations to 1100m; blue/black finish to metal.
