Bolt handle altered, non-original rubber pad, collector's value down the tube.

Impossibly long original barrel, bizarre original stock, priced like a collector's item. Buy it now for 5950 Euros.

yes its advertised as " restored "
he claim the barrel lenght is orignal so I dont know if anything ever was impossible especially with the old ones made before WW 1.

The Afrika Modell did come with a much longer barrel and a lengthened forend on the stock that did not go all the way to the front of the barrel. I have seen and fondled one in a collection in Brookfield WI - it was different from this one in the shape of the front end of the stock, though. But then my less than 2c comes from the one rifle in this type that I have seen and handled.

PS I have posted pictures of a very unusual Afrika Modell with a lot of unusual factory features a while ago on these very forums. As Lancaster points out, anything was likely possible from Oberndorf . . .

On page 526, pic #805, of his "MauserArchive" book, Jon Speed shows a very similar rifle, # 24142 of 1908 in 9x57. It shows the same style and proportions of the stock, just like the 10.75x68 shown above, including the horn foreend tip. Though the barrel length of the "African model" or "model L = lang" (both designations were post-WW1 inventions btw!) is usually given as about 70cm = 28", "68cm" may also be original. F.i. it may be measured from the front of the receiver ring instead correctly from the breech face.

I like it but my preference would be for a shorter barrel and foreend.

some years ago now I have lost data in a hard ware crash, safe pic's on nitro express is better way and they are available world wide for me

I noticed that there are no posted pictures of the top of the bolt handle/root and it is not visible in any of the photos, on the website photos of other rifles show the handle/root of other rifles, so this indicates there may be an issue with this bolt handle.

It's too bad if this rifle has been messed with-otherwise it looks pretty good.

The bolt handle has definitely been altered. For one thing, the scope is mounted too low for an unaltered bolt.

Second, the safety has been altered to allow for a low scope mount, unnecessary with the original bolt handle.

Third, the stock has been inletted to clear the bolt handle, not necessary with an original handle and finally, the bolt handle appears to be slightly swept to the rear, not the case with original handles.

Yes xausa It does appear the bolt handle sweeps back and appears it may also sweep out away from the stock as well in a radius. This modification would allow the handle to clear the low mounted scope. Not straight down like a proper Mauser. Nice rifle in a great caliber if the bolt hadn't been messed with. Very little collector value as previously stated. There is definitely a reason this individual did not post pictures of the top of the bolt handle. I would love to find an African type and seeing what was done to this one truly is disappointing.

Also the caliber barrel stamping is not reflective of typical Mauser stamping font.

Sad story. At one time during the early '70's an unaltered Afrika model came into my store, caliber 9X57. No one knew what it was in those benighted pre-Speed days, and its bizarre appearance demanded some alterations. So.... off came the protruding barrel end and the barrel was trimmed to the same length as the foreend, turning it into a kind of oversize Mannlicher carbine.

The bolt handle was altered for low scope and the action drilled and tapped for a Buehler MicroDial mount. On the mount was fitted a Lyman Alaskan scope with no internal adjustments, using one piece 22mm rings. The mount provided adjustments for both windage and elevation. The double set trigger arrangement was replaced with a conventional commercial adjustable trigger.

What emerged was a really sleek, well handling hunting rifle with a slightly longer than usual barrel and full stock. It is in the possession of the same owner to this day and has seen many an hour in the hunting field. Desecration? Yes, but it could have been much worse.
