Colt Model 1908 (.380)
      #221543 - 14/12/12 01:56 AM

My wife got this for me at an auction back in May 2010. She paid $400.00 for it. The serial number is #338 making it one of the first ones to roll of of the line sometime in May or June of 1908 - it's so hard to get information out of Colt. Much of the finish is gone and the grips are from the second issue of this model, but mechanically it's still very sound. I've put approximately 150 rounds of Remington(brand new)hardball and it didn't hiccup once. It is also still very accurate as long as I do my part. I have replaced the springs with Wolff springs, but I still have the originals. This pistol is one I am very fond of mainly because in the twenty-five years we have been together this is the only firearm my wife has ever purchased for me. She caught me totally by surprise when she came home with it. I've also always had a fondness for this little model. The photos were taken within the first hour after she gave the pistol to me which is why the tag from the auction is still attached to it.

This was taken last December one day when I got together with another Colt buff for a day of shooting at my department's range. I'm holding the little 1908. Most of the holes in the target are from the 1908, my shooting companion's Pre-war Super .38 Colt,Colt New service Target in 45 Colt, 44-40 Colt SAA Artillery model and my Colt Officer Model Target and Trooper. You can't tell from the photo, but it was very cold and blustery. However it was a great day of shooting nevertheless.

Nice little pistol. Back in the mid 70's in the Gun shop, we had close to a dozen of those - went for cheap, too - no one wanted one back then. That was then - I'd like to have a bunch of .380 Colt Pistols right now.

I always get a kick out of that. I can remember visitng a local gunshop one day in October 1987. It's along and boring story how I can remember the year and month. Anyway I recall looking at four or five Smith & Wesson Model 28 Highway Patrolmen. They were priced between $175 - $200 (USD). The onwer/operator said he couldn't give them away. Smith had stopped making the model the year before (1986) but police departments (in the United States) were switching to auto pistols in huge numbers, selling off their revolver inventories and revolvers were flooding the market. In addition nobody wanted a big old N frame .357 magnum. They were just big old clunky revolvers.

My how times have changed. I went back to that same gunstore a few weeks ago and spoke to the owner. I reminded him of that occassion and he just grinned. Now he sells any 28's he can get as fast as he puts them out on display. He's also charging close to $500.00 for them now.

Well I have one and I'm holding onto it.

Times have changed for sure.

I just got $550.00 for my K38 - with rubber grips. Have no idea where the original grips are. The gun sold for $600.00 even, $50.00 going to the shop for handling that for me.

Well you can still get second-hand Rossi and Charter Arms revolvers for a song at least.

Nice pistol. I have never owned one of these. A friend recently bought one in really fine shape with its box and all.

I recently bought a Colt Model 1908 Vest Pocket. Why? Who knows? Never owned one of those before either. Just a classic.

Thanks for sharing,
Curl

I would like one of the 1908 .25 pocket autos. Just because.

I believe your missis wants you to give it to her. Nice score for her hunt and gather instincts.

Yep she really surprised me. Guess she had been paying attention to all my rambling over the years about "old" guns that i would like in my collection.
