New H&H rifles
      #22077 - 10/12/04 09:11 PM

Last night went to champagne opening of new H&H store in Manhattan, three new doubles in the racks, .465 Royal 120g, .465 Royal Deluxe 127g, .375 H&H belted mag Royal 79g. Bargain price on .375 explained as made a couple years ago when dollar exchange rate was better. Deluxe supposed to have better engraving and wood than the regular Royal but it didn't look any better to me. Bolt action .375 was 33g, quality not nearly on a par with a top American custom maker rifle. Quality of doubles nice. Lots and lots of shotguns, pair of overunders 225g.

Vigillinus,

I'm going to print your post and put it on the wife's pillow as my Christmas wish list!

Which double rifle did you pick out?

Cheers,

Lets put this into prespective. I just bought two new double rifles in the last 6 months; Chapuis brouse with AAA wood in .470 NE 12g and Merkel .375 belted mag 7.5g - that's a magnitude of order cheaper! But my guns are just lowley continental makes

Bonanza,

You just don't get it. Vigillinus said this was a "champagne" opening of the new H&H outlet. How do you think they afford the champagne? Gotta have the cost figured in somewhere. I guess they tack it onto the guns!!!

Cheers,

I'm looking forward to seeing their new store and will be visiting it when in NYC on Saturday of next week (Dec 18th). Have they completely abandoned the retail distribution of their clothing at the new location as they indicated they would? Is the new store's gun inventory larger than what they had in the old location?

Brits know doubles. Brits don't know bolts. Americans & Germans know bolts.

Spring, no clothing, guns and shooting stuff only. Not as many guns as the last place. A contraction. PeterB, IMO Germans don't know how to shape a bolt rifle any better than the Brits, granted that Blaser, Sauer et al are much more innovative in action design than Americans.

The Germans get a lot of leeway from me (maybe another century worth) for developing the 98 Mauser. Of course, if they had not developed the 98, I am sure Mr Browning would have The Brits have never had a background in rifles and have never trusted their own serfs to have guns, so you don't expect them to do well in rifles other than doubles and single shots. Now the Krauts are losing ground fast with a thing like the Blaser (bolt OR double), but this too shall pass. With guys like Searcy and Hoenig for double rifles and Galazan & Dakota for shotguns, we lead the pack as usual. The Brits just suck on bolt rifles and cannot even get it right for $33,000.

mr browning was an outstanding designer but that he will have make the mauser98 rifle sometimes, I am doubt. its fact that the brits have had the heigth with the hammerless double gun, after they are not able to build a good bolt action(yes i know the enfield works) self loading pistol, self loading rifle, etc.the enfield assault rifle was such a wrong construction, all going to heckler&koch in oberstdorf in the 90 for reworking but it was not 100% good after this. I dont say the brits are stupid but the great time is gone, this happen anywhere, anytime.the american springfield rifle with cartridge was a copy from the mauser 98!!!. the garand self loading rifle was good in the first view but the real new gun was the german sturmgewehr44. the russians understand the concept and copy this with the kalashnikow. us army like to safe the garand system after ww2 with the m14, its was not a success. and the m16? its now clear that the time for this gun is gone. two possiblitys: heckler&koch build a new gun for the american forces or they making a new action fiting in the old m16 case. in any way is heckler&koch the best modern gun maker on this planet and this firm is mauser since ww2. the new american rifle cartrige will be a modern version of the good old 7x57 mauser, brits and american love it since they know it first time in the south africa and cuba.
on things like blaser rifle s you can see what democracy have made with germany

last point: pay a gunmaker anywhere 100000$ for making a gun, he will do a good work

Vig:

At these prices, do you regret selling that sidelock Rigby .350 yet?

400 Nitro, of course I miss the splendid Rigby but the price I got for it in August 1998 was very substantial, I had tried to sell it for X through SGN and Gun List without a response and got X+30% from a prominent dealer, he then resold it, no doubt at another big bump, to a collector of whom a fable is told: the collector was having guns made at Purdeys, was dissatisfied with the pace of the work, and purchased the lease on Purdey's building from the City of London, then took an apartment on the top floor so he can bug the gunsmiths. Whether this is apocrypha or truth remains uncertain. I have met the collector who is a nice gent, obviously monied, but had not heard the tale at that time so did not ask him about it !!!!!!!!!

Vig:

Sounds like you did well on the .350. That collector is a persistent bugger, isn't he? I like his style!

I enjoyed your article. Sure hope there is another in the hopper.
