BSA Rifle Question

This is only my second post since joining and NitroX suggested that I try a question here so if I'm going to get flogged for it, so be it.

For more decades than I want to remember I have had a BSA 458 Win. Mag.
I have never known exactly what model it is because it has no mention of same anywhere on the gun.
On the left side of the chamber is stamped ' 69 GRs.nc 510 GRs. bullet '.
Would anyone know what model it is and also what the writing describes ?
It has a single blade fixed rear sight... now would the writing describe a load that the factory made the sights on the gun for, or is it a proof load of sorts ?
And what do the small letters 'nc' denote.

I do know some BSA variations had the model name on the gun as in Majestic, but I also have another BSA in 7X57 that simply has ' BSA 7X57' stamped on the side of the receiver, this is probably a Hunter model.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Sorry can't help you, but it sounds like a GREAT rifle - same with the 7mm.

You are lucky to own that rifle ,evidently BSA they only made 257 rifles between 1958 and 1967 ,the 458s were Prefixed with 9C ,i believe .i think the NC means Nitro Cellulose ,A fellow in Africa called Paul Grobler used for of them to shoot many [thousand ] elephants ,during 30 years of hunting with them ,and apparently the rifles never let him down ,despite being a maligned push feed ,does yours have the muzzle brake ? Im sure its a Majestic, as its the only Model thay made in 458.I would hang on to it if i were you !

I have a BSA Monarch catalog and like Boswell said they only show a 7mm Rem Mag. Also the sporting goods company in Minnesota sold a copy of the BSA action, the U9 Herters with B/A's and completed rifles. So I guess anything is possible

It really is a good shooting rifle and seems to like anthing I have fed it.
In 1993 it filled my one and only grizzly tag with a single round, a 600 gr. Barnes Original over a case full of 748 powder, cracking my collar bone in the process.
Cast bullets made for the 45-70 shoot very well and are great for hunting game like Mulies or even Moose.
With a 3X Leupold on it only weighs about 8.5 lbs. so this 66 yr. old fogey can pack it all day long.
And yes, it does have that wild looking factory built in brake.... seems to work though..

If you could post a picture, we could probably identify it.

I'm pretty familiar with the BSA's, Dad bought a Majestic in 1959, and his main hunting buddy bought a Monarch in the '60's when they came out.

Hi Crobar,
The load stamping on your rifle date it pre 1955. This is interesting as the 458 Win Mag is usually quoted as being released in 1956.

The rifle will most likely be a BSA "Emperor" made from the mid to late 1950's.
The Emperor model was only offered in .458 Win Mag.
A good photo of the proof marks can provide the year in which the proofing was done.

Crobar,
Among the proof stampings on your rifle there should be one which looks like two crossed swords with letters/numbers.
The letter in the top left will provide the year of proofing.
If you can make out what that letter is and let us know, or post a photo of that mark, we can work out the year.

I'm still trying to take some glare - free pics, not having much success.
The crossed-sword proof mark shows the letter I on the left side, the letter B on the right and it looks like the number 2 at bottom center.... hope this is a help..

Ok, the letter "I" would put the date as 1958, which sounds more like it.

Is there a proofmark stamp showing the service pressure in Tons per square inch?
Something like 19.5 TONS per [] " or similar.

There is no proofmark stamp regarding the service pressure on the topside of the rifle.
I will pull the stock off one day soon and have a look.
