Colt Super .38 Automatic - #21051

Made 1936

While doing a little photography work yesterday I decided to take some detailed photos of my pre-WW2 Colt Super .38. Although I wasn't thrilled with my work here are some of the images:

A man would not feel helpless with that on his belt.

Here's a scan (Adobe PDF) of a very interesting and informative article about the pre-war Colt Super 38 pistols:

Actually, it's my understanding the little machinepistol is select fire. You can see the selector on the right rear of the slide where it does its work on the disconnector. It would be a rip to shoot.

The pre-war Colt Commercial Super 38's and 45's were darn near works of art. Very nice. That one should have been featured in Wilson's book. Beautiful.

Thanks Checkman. This Super was one of my "grail" guns, and it pals around with my pre-WW2 Government Model. The Govt Mod isn't quite as prissy. I posted it some time back: Pre-WW2 Colt Government Model

I have a few other interesting 1911 pistols I might share when I find the time for a bit of photography. One is a Govt Mod from 1917, another is a U.S. Property from 1918 (brushed blue, pre-"Black Army" finish), and then there's an early post-WW2 "Type 2" Super .38 "fat barrel", and so on.

Among the many firearms forums that I am a member on is the Colt Forum ( http://www.coltforum.com/index.php ). Last year I got together with another member who lives just a few miles from me. Amazing how small the world can be at times. Anyway as you might imagine he's a real Colt aficionado. He brought put several pieces from of his collection to include a pre-war Super 38 auto with an almost pristine nickel finish. It was beautiful and what was even better was he left me fire not one or two magazines through it. First time I had ever fired a Super .38 caliber pistol. It was very easy shooting and despite all the talk I've heard about the Super 38 not being very accurate it did just fine at the 25 and 40 yard line. I still can't believe that not only did he left me shoot it, but that he is shooting it. Very nice.
