Don't expect the stock to crack as it has a nice straight grain. And it is only a .375 afterall.




I have to wonder how the Whitworth stock handles full power 458 loads.
There is really only a small wafer of wood left between the back of the mag box and the trigger!

That might be an area to consider some steel/epoxy bedding.

Yes, for sure.
I'm going to do some serious bedding (and other) work before shooting it.

Wow, someone must have really hated that barrel band!
Just think of the work involved and the cost of doing it!

Remove brazed on front sight ramp.
Remove brazed on barrel band.
Re-braze front sight ramp.
Re-blue barrel.
Fit new swivel in fore-end etc etc.

Then again maybe they just ground through the band and heated it up and removed it that way.
Maybe that would account for the "detent".
Would still need a reblue though.

As NitroX has stated, these guns seem to come in different "versions".
IMO some Whitworths may have 2 recoil lugs, others have only one.

Some have barrel band swivels, others have the swivel in the wood.

Some have Whitworth on the front receiver ring and some do not etc etc.

Maybe, just maybe, your Whitworth came from the factory with the swivel in the wood.

Well I'm about ready to "attack" the Whitworth and get her ready for shooting.
She needs some serious bedding work along with a few other refinements.
The magazine box needs some work as does the standing rear sight and the safety button.
The trigger release is crisp and nice weight but the face of the trigger is horrible and has a rough feel.
The bolts cocking ramps need a bit of a tidy and the bolt could use a bit of slicking in the receiver and will get lapped.
I've already sorted the feed which was not perfect when I first got the rifle.
She now feeds the 500 softs real nice but I still have to check it with solids.
Feed ramp will get a polish.
I would love to shorten the barrel by 1 1/2 inches to make it a 22 incher and may do this later.
May also alter the ballance slightly and add a little weight as this rifle is pretty light for a 458.
I'm looking forward to having a play with this rifle both in the workshop and later in the scrub.

There appears to be three totally different large cal rifles based on the Interarms barreled action.
At the lower price level is the Mark X Alaskan, next is the Whitworth Express and at the top is the Churchill One of One Thousand.
The Whitworth Express seems to have had several variations and the Alaskan and the Churchill might have done also.

Hell yeah, they even apparently knocked up at least one left handed version!
If you go to the top of this page and click on "Forums" under the banner, you'll see a wild lookin' dude with a lefty 375!

Saw this thread was being read and decided to add to it.

Was shooting my rifle in the BGRC National Competition in Darwin earlier this month.

I think it was the group 1 competition shoot. Last six shoots. Hot day, barrel already hot from the rounds put through it. Shoot off first round ... barrel vibrated funnily .... heard and metallic tinkle .... next shot .... oops, front sight is missing .... kept shooting, sitting in the V site, raising the muzzle until I could see it, drop it down and pull the trigger. Managed to put 2 out of the last 5 rounds into the target ....

Will post a pic.
