      #2194 - 17/04/03 10:11 PM

HI all,

This is to speed up some interest in the raffle the sales are going really slow and I don't want any of the guys who have bought tickets already to wait to long.

Anyway here is a way that anyone of you can win one of the tickets. YOu will need to write a story as a diary entry over 7 days in other words just imagine you did win the raffle and what happened on day one to day 7 your departure date. YOu will need to use some keywords and all of them must be used. So for all your dreamers start dreaming and maybe win the real thing.

Here are the keywords :
Klaserie, buffalo, lion, hippo, croc, kudu, waterbuck, zebra, lapa, camp, klaserie river, olifants river, Frederik, Valie, Charmaine, Braai, Bakkie, elephant, trophy, campfire.

Remember all keywords must be used here is a quick example.

Day 1:

Arrived in Africa for my very firsrt time in my life I was shocked to see a pure city and then driving off to notice the change into the thick bush ......... Blah blah blah

Day 7:

I feel my heart sinking and I'm already making plans to set foot again in Africa. ...........

The competition will go on untill April the 11th and I hope that NitroX will help playing judge ?

Well good luck gentelman and ladies and best of luck and please there is still lots of tickets that can be bought.

The Klasserie hunt

The wind was not that hard in the face anymore, we climbed up the small kopje and raised our binoculars to search the area for Buffalo. But there was only a small heard with Zebras and we also saw a croc in the Oilifants river. We had walked for days around for days since I did not want to do this hunt in the bakkie but by foot.

It was three days since Frederik and his wife Charmaine picked me up at the airport and took me to this lovely place; Klasserie. The first day we sat around the campfire and was talking memories from our last hunt together and remembered the great braai we had that time.

But now it was hunting. We took some water and went on and crossed Klasserie river that was almost dry. On the other side we heard some noice that we believed were Elephants, so we decided to turn right and walk along the river bank were we instantly saw a beautiful Waterbuck. Valie judged it to 32 inch and wanted me to shoot, but for me the buff was the main issue of the hunt so we just went on and kept his trophy in our minds. However faith would later in the week give me the opportunity to take this guy.

As the sun was to set we walked towards the place were the camp would be situated this night. After some food we went to bed and I fell a sleep at once. A couple of hours later I heard something strange outside my tent. When I heard the roar I understood it was a lion heading towards the lapa. I grabbed my Winchester and checked it so it was loaded. I did not sleep any more before the sunrise.

The morning was all calm and we sat up in the bakkie that would take us to another part of the area from were we were going to walk back home. On the way I had chances for many nice photos of animals like Kudu and Hippo.

Just an hour after we left the bakkie the tracker found something that made him real anxious. It was only half an hour at maximum since a heard with five buffalos had passed this place, and it looked like there were not only one but three really big animals. We started to follow the tracks slowly and after a couple of hours we had contact. We crawled on to them to get a better look and when we were only hundred yards away we could easily see the big boy. We crawled another 40 yards and got behind a tree. I stood up and aimed at him with the Winchester 375. I had a good rest thanks to the Safari Ching Sling when I let the 380 grains Rhino bullet leave the barrel.

The bullet entered perfectly but there was no sign of reaction so I aimed again and went for the spine and he was down. What a feeling when I was standing for the photos. This would be something to remember for ever.

The rest of the week went on good and we took some more games but nothing that we could compare to the Buff.

It was with memories not of this world Frederik took me to the airport. As soon I got into the plane I was starting to shiver, what a hunt I had been on, it was fantastic how much it was possible to get for 55 dollars that was the price for the raffle ticket. Only minutes later I was sleeping…………………..

SafariHunt,

Here's a pitiful try:

The flight was a long one. I had been restless and had failed to bring enough reading material to take up some time. I could hardly contain my excitement and couldn't concentrate on the reading material I had brought. All my thoughts were of the Klaserie, an area to which I thought I would never return. Frederick had talked me into coming back for another shot at a Buff. It would be good to see him and the others; Charmaine and Valie along with the camp staff. I also hoped that Frederick wasn;t kidding about having the Braai before heading out into the bush. The airline food was, well, airline food. I needed some real food.

After clearing customs, Frederick met me with his usual big smile and handshake and I knew it would be another great hunt. Frederick didn't disappoint me as the Braai was wonderful and now I was ready to travel. It didn't take long until the clutter of the city was old news and the glorious open spaces spread out endlessly before us. I was anxious to begin the hunt.

Upon arriving in camp, I was greeted by the familiar faces of Charmaine and Valie. It was good to see them. I had only met them during my first hunt with Frederick but it seemed that I had known them forever. Hunting spawns friends and bonds that last forever. I got my gear sorted and cleaned up a bit and joined everyone around the campfire. Valie asked if Frederick had told me of the old waterbuck they had spotted down by the Oliphants river. Frederick was smiling. He knew I wanted a Buff, but he knew that I wanted a trophy waterbuck most of all. He told me we would take a look first thing in the morning. Lion, hippo, croc, kudu, zebra.........they all say Africa to me. But a big mature Waterbuck materializing out of the thick bush, well, to me, there is no finer trophy. It had been a long more than two days traveling from Alaska so I said, "good night" and turned in. I fell asleep, thinking I could hear, or maybe imagining, a small herd of elephant near the lapa. I slept soundly.

It seemed like just minutes later, Frederick woke me up. There was a chill in the morning air. After tea and rusk, we headed down to the Oliphants River to try to find the waterbuck. We only took the bakkie part of the way as Frederick knows I don't like to do the Michelin Safari. Beat feet for me. We walked and glassed for several hours before spotting some waterbuck cows. Shortly after they melted back into the bush, the bull came down beside the river to water. He was very cautious but we had the wind and after getting closer, 60 yards or so, I shot. He fell where he stood, got up and Frederick told me to hit him again. I did and he was ours. Rowland-Ward? No. He was old and massive with great worn down horns. Musty and beautiful. What a first day. That night, as the fire burned down we decided to hunt the Klaserie river for the rest of the week. Frederick said there were lots of Buff. Tomorrow seemed so far away.

For the next five days, we saw buffalo, lots of buffalo. My luck had changed and the Buff were spooky, or the wind changed, or............any number of things to keep us from getting close to the bulls we wanted. Tomorrow was the last day.

Bright and early, rusk and tea, and off we went. It was if we were herding the Buff instead of hunting them. Right after lunch, as if placed there by the red gods of the hunt, a fine bull appeared, by himself, going into the thornbush. After getting the wind in our favor, we moved to try to position ourselves for the shot. And the shot came. Later stepped off at 57 paces the Buff appeared in an opening, standing, nose up, checking the wind. I was ready and when I felt Frederick touch my arm, I fired as I also heard Frederick say "No".................I shot a bull we had not seen before. We heard the bellow that signals death. His head had been partially obscured by the bush. He was very old with one horn worn down and thin, the other broken off completely. I felt badly for Frederick as he had hung in there all week and produced when the pressure was on. I was excited and not paying attention when I shot. Frederick was disappointed for me. Disappointed? No. I wish it had been the other bull but what a great week and there WAS the waterbuck.

The ride to the airport seemed to take no time at all. Frederick smiled that smile and I told him I'd ring him up after I got home..............you know for next years hunt.
As I write this, I sit beneath those old Buff horns knowing that in just a few months.....................

Joe

Warthogs on the Run!

It happened when I was about 12-13 years old.My first chance to hunt with my .243 Brno all alone in the bush.I don't think my dad reckonend that I would shoot anything as I was a very novice hunter with no experience.

We visited family friends on their small little bushveldt farm just south of Louis Trichardt,a small town in the Limpopo Province of South Africa.There was'nt any real game but you could get the occasional Kudu,Waterbuck,Impala and Warthogs that moved through the property after water and food.

The Saturday morning I was up at 4h30,had coffee,toast and small bowl of "pap".At Five I was ready to go but it was still dark so I decided to walk slowly to the cattle "kraal" first and maybe see if I'm lucky to catch a Duiker feeding of the cattle and horse feed.I only had two bullets cause at that stage of any young boy's life they tend to think that they are the greatest hunters that Africa had ever seen and my rules was one bullet for one animal.By the time I got there it was starting to get light but to my biggest disgust there was no Duiker.The only way out now was to challenge the bush and see if I get anything walking and stalking.

I was walking for probably 2-3km,wich felt like 50km when I decided to head home.Remember that a young boy's first priority is his stomach!!!And this was really bothring me at this stage.
On my way home,it was about 9h00,I saw in front of me a warthog burrow but thought nothing of it as I reckoned it was to late for them to still be sleeping.So I decided to see how fresh the hole is and to maybe come back early the next morning.
And there it was as I was about to jump over the opening of the burrow.This two big white shiny tusks right in my face.I frose and with heavily shaking legs backed off to the closest Maroela tree.(usually the tallest and biggest in that part of the South African bush.)
So there I stood behind the tree looking for someting to throw at the warty's to see if they might emerge from the whole.After several attempts with pieces of cattle dung I decided to go back and shoot the big pig that is blocking the hole first.Then I'll have time to go fetch my dad and uncle with more guns and then we could get the rest of the family to.As I inched forward towards the hole warthogs burst out of the hole about 2 feet in front of me.It was chaos.I could feel some of them brushing past my legs.Acting on instinct I through the rifle against my shoulder,pointed at the closest moving thing and pulled the shot of.Asplit second later I saw the young pig lying dead still in front of me but there was a terrible scream coming from behind the Raisonbush just to my right.The next moment I had this huge mother pig charging me straight from the front.I made a crack for the Maroela tree again but there was no time ti climb so I was only hiding behind the tree.The screaming sound was still going on I figured that I must have wounded this pig who is showing all this aggression towards me.Everytime I move out from behind the tree she charges again from the direction of the noise.Now I don't know wat to do.I ran to another tree to get a better view of what is screaming like that.There I could see the bigger warthog is trying to help another smaller one up but not succesfully.I had to make a choice to shoot the big one and just cut the obviously wounded one's throat.Eventually I got a chance and shot the screaming pig through the head and the big old sow left the scene.

There I was with 2 warthog and technically one shot on my first outing alone.
I hid them next to the road and covered them with some thorn branches and set of for home to get a recovery vehicle.When I got home nobody wanted to drive me back to the spot to fetch my warthog as they didn't believe my farfetched story.Eventually we went and to everybody's surprise I loaded 2 nice young warthogs on the vehicle.
I could feel my chest grow and grow with pride.
What happened was that I shot the first piggy nice behind the shoulder(LUCK!!!) and the bullet went through to hit the second pig on the back wich paralized him.
I had to do a bit of changing clothes after this whole incident but it is something that I'll never forget in my whole life!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here's mine!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Though crowded things went smoothly going through Customs and as I walked through I was met at the airport by the very smiley faces of Frederik, Charmaine and Valie. Everyone kindly grabbed luggage and we were on our way to do battle with a big, bad Klaserie bachelor bull! I have never been to the Klaserie and did not know what to expect. I was just happy to be off that blasted airplane and back in the land of red dust and thorny trees.
We arrived at the camp near dusk and was greeted by more smiling staff with some delicious cool drinks and could see the campfire was beckoning to us in the lapa. The evening was spent getting to know one another around the fire where the first safari meal was also served. Everyone retired fairly early in anticipation of the next day’s adventure.
Day 1 – Up well before dawn as I am too excited to sleep. Coffee tastes good this morning in the lapa and Valie is also ready to get on with the day. I like his attitude. He says he knows of a hot spot near the Klaserie River for the start of my big bad buff hunt. Off in the bakkie we go looking for fresh spoor.
No buff today but we did see some baby crocs and heard some hippos snorting in the distance. I was able to connect with four very nice impala rams. Braai for dinner, fresh impala filets!
Day 2 - Up early again and off to see about a buffalo.
Came in today with a huge waterbuck bull that I could not pass up. He will score number one and beat all previous SCI and Rowland Ward trophy records by several inches! Valie is very happy with this, poor Frederik wishes it was he on safari now. Another good braai at dinner, we get the campfire roaring with tons of leadwood. A good bottle of scotch is being passed around the lapa.
Day 3 - Heard some lions roaring during the night. What a neat sound, you feel it more than you hear it. On our way out we find a dead kudu that was the reason for the lion serenade. Must have been tasty as there wasn’t much left. We finally find some buff tracks and follow along. That evening we find a herd but it is a nursery group of cows and calves. I just want to know where their daddies are. For the evening Charmaine had whiped up a potkjie ( I hope I spelled that right) made of zebra meat. It was delicious.
Day 4 - On the way out of camp while in the bakkie we spot some elephant tracks and follow them down the road a spell. The elephants have sure torn up the trees. See a big heard of bucking zebras running towards the Olifants River. Evening time we find another herd of buff but cannot get close enough. We see some possible trophy bulls but it is getting too dark so we will try and cut their tracks in the morning.
Day 5 - Hear the lions again over night. I shoot a massive kudu this morning that is taping near 70 inches. Frederik looks a little ill. I think he has drunk some bad water or something. I tell him he should have Charmaine make him some dry toast for lunch. Late afternoon we come upon some nice buffalo bulls and spot three shooters. Valie says they are all around 43 to 42 inches but says we can do much better and to let these bulls go. We stay till dark watching them feed with a nearby herd of Zebras. Valie keeps laughing at Frederik for some reason around the campfire that night. Frederik still looks a little sick.
Day 6 - Real early this morning we go back to the Klaserie River to look for some good buffalo bulls. It is still very dark when we leave camp and at the river the dawn is just starting to show and Valie points out a grunting heard of hippos feeding on some short grass on a bank. They have not seen us. Valie says I can shoot a hippo if I want. He says a couple of them look pretty big. Sure enough, one is very big so I decide to go for it. At the shot the rest of the hippos stampede! Watch out Frederik, here they come! My targeted bull drops within 20 yards and on dry land too! What a monster, Valie says it is the biggest one they have ever got. Another record breaking trophy animal for me. I am really starting to like the Klaserie!
It is hot we have lunch in the shade of some camelthorn trees and nap until 3.
We run into some more buffalo bulls this afternoon and see the lions are pestering them. These bulls are estimated to be in the 46-inch range and again, Valie says no, we can do better! So we let them go and head back to camp.
Lots of booze flying around the lapa tonight. I am going to be hung over in the morning. Frederik seems to be in better spirits too.
Day 7 - Valie says don’t worry we will get a buffalo for me today. I say pass the coffee for my hangover and lets get going. We get out again very early. There is a huge herd of elephant blocking the road so we wait them out. Around 7 am some big buff tracks are found. We are now on the track. We find buff at 8 am and it’s a bachelor herd. What luck too! The bad thing is they spot us and decide to see just what we are all about. Valie says pointing, "there’s the biggest one", but there are 5 of them milling around and I don’t know which one he is pointing at. Now the buffalo are getting a bit of an attitude and I can hear their grunts. Valie gets me pointed onto the right bull and then I dropped it with one shot from the old 45-70 I am carrying round. We get a death bellow as the rest of the buffalo clear out in a cloud of red dust. Turns out this buff measures a good 52 inches and has absolutely massive bosses. Wow, what a hunt! Frederik is speachless for a moment but then says, "I told you the Klaserie had good bulls!" What a way to end a 7 day trip to the Klaserie. Thanks to Frederik, Valie and Charmaine!
Re: Raffle ticket for the Klaserie buff up for grabs ! [Re: SafariHunt]
      #2400 - 17/04/03 10:11 PM
Well, you can't say I didn't try !
An awful lot of research had gone into choosing the right outfitter, the area to be hunted, and the PH.
I had an idea of what Klaserie would be like from one of the Coenraad Veermark videos. The outfitter had been recommended, and the newly qualified PH, Frederick seemed a good choice, being fresh,I felt he would be full of enthusiasm, and keen to build a good reputation in the hunting industry.
The hunt is for 7 days, the main animal sought is Cape Buffalo, along with a Kudu Bull, Impala and warthog.
As the plane banked into it's final approach , I looked out of the window and caught my first glimpse of Africa, and got that feeling of 'coming home'. I had read about it, but never thought it could be true.
At the airport , I was warmly met and welcomed by Frederick(not too sure about the pony tail !), Charmaine and Valie.
After the usual formalities, we drove to the concession, and the camp on the banks of the Klaserie river.
The camp was rustic, was set in a dream location , and took care of all one's domestic needs.
That evening, we sat by the campfire, dinner was plainsgame , done on the Braai, and the Ph and myself then talked about all things African.
We were both assessing each other.
Beer by the lapa.
We discussed my trophy expectations, back up shots, and the type of hunting experience I had.
Went to sleep to the haunting sound of Hippos in the river, and the distant call of Lions.
DAY 1.
Quick trip to the range, where I test fired the 375 H&H, using both solids and softs, at ranges of 50 and 100 yards.
I noticed the trackers and PH showing unusually keen interest in the way I handled the weapon, and closely examines my shots on target. No doubt working out how much tracking of wounded animals they had before them.
In the Bakkie, a Toyota Land Cruiser, we drove around the concession, hoping to cut the spoor of Buffalo.
Saw a lot of game, Zebra,waterbuck and tuskless Elephant cow.
Shot my first African animal, warthog at 80 yards.
Back to camp, bath , beer, dinner and to bed and the sound of the Hippo bulls.
Day 2
Up early, big breakfast, salt tablets, and we were off.
Walked the banks of the Olifants river, looking for Daggaboy spoor. Saw a half decent croc on the far bank as he slithered into the water on our approach.
Bumped what I thought was a very decent Kudu Bull. PH reckoned we could get much better.
Sandwiches and fruit under a tamarind tree, a brief siesta, and we were off again.
Plenty of old buffalo spoor, nothing fresh. Ph appears confident.
Spotted decent impala on a flood plain, Ph set the sticks up for a 120 yard shot. Second African trophy, a 23" Impala Ram.Apparently the Chef does a mean impala liver grill.
Drinks and dinner at camp.
Love the time spent round the campfire. A bit conscious of asking too many questions.
DAY 3
Up at sunrise, breakfast and a quick check of the waterholes. The tracker has picked up the spoor of a group of three old bulls, and we spend the next four and a half hours tracking them.The dung gets fresher, and we hear them move off in the thick stuff a couple of times, but I don't see a thing. The tracker points them out a couple of times. All I see is bush. Apparently , there is a good bull amongst them.
We stop for lunch and drinks, and rest up in the shade for a while. We then start tracking, at long last I get a look at them on the opposite hill, about 300 yards away. We glass them, one bull looks good. PH reckons it will go about 42", and has hard bosses.Sounds and looks good to me.
We give up the chase just before sunset.
Just over seven hours of tracking with no chance of a shot.
Drop into bed exhausted.
DAY 4
Up at dawn,we pick up where we left off and apart from a break for lunch, we track the bulls all day.
In the afternoon they enter a pretty big patch of ilala palms and give us the run around.On a couple of occasions , they were so close, I could smell them, but it was too dense to see. They then take us on a walk around for several miles, and come back to the ilala palms just before sundown.
Back to camp, treat the blisters, bath, dinner and straight to bed.
DAY 5
Up early. Must have looked in a bad way, as the PH asks if I am OK , and offers a break from the Buffalo for the day.
No way, this is personal, I want that old boy.
We pick up the spoor from the previous evening. They have spent time at a wallow by the palms. We cut the spoor, go up a deep valley, and within 200 yards, the tracker drops to the floor and nods to the right. There on the other side of the valley, no more than 50 yards away are the three bulls. The PH whispers to take the one on the far right , quick, as the bull on the left has seen us. I run the cross hairs a third of the way up the shoulder and squeeze off my first shot at a Cape Buffalo. It all happens in slow motion.
At the shot, all three bulls take off towards the palms amid sounds of crashing bush and thundering hooves.
The PH is not sure I hit him , as he says he heard the round whizz into the sky.
We walk forward 50 odd yards , looking for a place to cross the valley, when I look up and see the bull on the opposite side, stood under a tree, staring at us. I fire three shots into the stationary animal's chest. He just stands and stares at us. The PH keeps saying 'Watch the bosses, don't shoot the bosses'. The animal then takes a step forward, and collapses down the slope, coming to rest at the bottom of the valley. He does not move , and is stone dead by the time we walk up to him.
He measures 42", has hard bosses,unusually loose teeth and is the best looking Cape Buffalo in all of Africa. Well, I think so anyways.
Back at camp, a celebration, beer , and a wonderful nights sleep.
Buffalo tail for dinner tomorrow.
DAY 6
Had a lie in, a late, big breakfast, a walk to the skinning sheds and a quick look at the bosses from the old boy. The cape is buried in salt.
Spent the rest of the morning looking for kudu. saw a few, nothing of trophy quality size. Still reckon the one we let go was a good size.
Blisters playing up, so we call it a day a bit early, and spend the evening in camp, listening to the sounds of Africa. At night , I hear the sawing sound of a leopard, and drift off to sleep with that sound.
The Buffalo tail was excellent.
DAY 7.
Up early, and walking up to a water hole, about two miles from camp, heard a baboon bark his warning, and saw two Kudu bulls, about 180 yards away, running up a hill. PH whistles out and they both stop and look in our direction.
'Shoot the second one' says the PH, and I snap a shot off just behind the shoulder. They both take off. PH reckons I missed as the animal showed no signs of being hit.
We walk up to the spot and the tracker points to a single spot of blood on the ground. A few yards further, and he points to a bit of congealed blood in a branch, about 8 feet up. 'It's a lung shot, that's blood he has coughed out, he is struggling to breathe' says the PH. A few yards further and he is there, on his stomach, head twisted around, an old Bull, horns spiralling to 57", very wide.
Back at camp, we relax, then have a walk up to the skinning shed and look at the trophies.
Can't wait to get them on the wall back home.
Don't feel too bad leaving, as we will be back next year, 15 days, Buffalo and Leopard, then the year after that Buffalo and Lion and after that Buffalo and.........Wonderful bite that bug has.
Mpofu.
