Here, in Oriental-Pyrenean (département des Pyrénées-Orientales - 66), we hunt isard from mid September to end of January, the best time being end of October to the first week of December.
Indeed we have also big mountain wild boars (sangliers) and when we meet them we have to take care of the weight before to shoot !
Usually we walk and climb at least ten hours a day and with a heavy backpack the comeback could be very hard.
Notice also that we have many great red stags, roe deers and muflons.

The season is on the end side, past Sunday was the last and we have only next Wednesday to complete the isard hunting plan.
Yesterday the weather was fine, but the walking was on the hard side.
I can't resist the pleasure to show you some photos.
Those who know me will recognize Elvis, my Jack Russel and my hunting buddy, Guy, a man made of rock !

We are now at the middle of the mountain hunting season for isard.
Weather isn't as sweet than last year…cold, wind, snow…but heavy sun !
For info, I use a technical D&D 6,5 Creedmoor rifle built on a much modified Remington Seven action, fitted with a match grade SS Lothar Walther 23" barrel, bedded in a Mc Millan "Edge" composite stock.
The scope is a Swarovski Z5 and my binoculars are Leica Ultravid HD 10x42.

Lovely photographs!! What does isard taste like? Lamb, goat, venison? Fantastic, I would guess, especially when you have worked hard for it!

Isard meal is a cross between venison and lamb.
As you know, us, frog eaters, are very fond of cooking and the French one is among the best.
For my own taste, I like the cutlets, lightly fried and cooked in tomatoes and red pepper sauce.
However I must confess that I'm not a big red meal fan, having a preference for our Mediterranean fishes.

Who makes that backpack you are using to take the Isard off the mountain. Look much better than a traditional Roesack.

The backpack is an old LAFUMA 80 liters "Land Cruiser".

Thanks Dorleac for your comments on Back Packs - looks just like a typical norml mountain back pack and very good for carrying a load. I've an old Karrimor Jaguar which is very similar but haven't thought of using it to carry Roe Bucks out of the woods. I have a new piece of ground where the carry out is a god few miles. Do you wrap the Isard in a waterproof bag to keep to keep the blood off the pack and the rest of your kit, or do you just give it a good wash when you are finished?

Is there any difference between an Isard and a Chamois, or Isard the local name for them in the Pyranees.

Beautiful rifles - I am sure that life is too short to waste time hunting with plastic stocked horrors unbalanced with Bipods and Moderators as seem to be all the fashion in the UK.
