Red Stags in Scotland

I was in Scotland a couple of weeks ago and had the opportunity to go stag stalking in the Highlands. I really enjoyed it and had the opportunity to take two stags.

Here is the first one taken at Glen Lyon.

And my second stag I shot at Glen Tromie.

Both stags were taken with the the following rifle. A new Rigby on a Mauser action in 6.5x55. I know that some will cry fowl regarding the caliber, but here's how that came about. A customer ordered a the rifle and once we had the barreled action in the shop, he had to cancel the order. So we finished the rifle with stalking in the Highlands in mind. We left off the iron sights, slimmed the barrel down some. Anyway, this is the result. We had a new Leica Magnus scope in the shop to put on the rifle, which is too big, but a very nice piece of glass.

Well done!!! A very beautiful rifle, I also think the 6,5x55 is a good choice for hunting in Scotland. The second stag is a good trophy. I have been in Scotland several times, but have not been close to that one. I have one like the first. It´s a great countryside to hunt in. /Staffan

Well done on the stags. That second one is a very nice Scots Royal.

Nice rifle too. It is good to see Rigby again as a brand making classicly styled rifles of good quality.

Nice place with lots to see and buy. He was trying to get me to buy a classic deer stalker but I couldn't do it. I like the hat and it is very warm!

Kent - very nice!! I do love that rifle, too.
I was a bit surprised to see the relatively small body size of the stags. I'd thought they were similar in size to our Vancouver and Queen Charlotte Island Roosevelt Elk, which are normally larger than the standard Rockey Mountain Elk. I understand there are Roosevelt elk in Oregon as well. Interesting about the body mass.

They seem about like a good sized mule deer.

I'll be they are GREAT eating.

Are 6 points normal for a mature trophy stag?

You are correct there are Roosevelt's in both Oregon and parts of Washington. And a few years I saw some elk in Arizona that were huge, 2-3 hundred pounds heavier than the elk in Montana, not sure if that is due to nutrition and mild winters or if they are Roosevelts also.

They don't have the nutrition that you get in other parts of the world. It's pretty tough going up there in the Highlands. They are heavier before the rut. They spend the better part of two weeks in the rut and lose a lot of weight, not that they are that big to begin with. Consequently their antler growth is smaller than the same species in southern England or Europe. This one is considered a Royal because he has 12 points and yes, this is a very nice trophy for that part of the world.

Red deer as a species are quite a bit smaller than wapiti.

The Scottish red deer are also smaller than red deer in many other parts of the world due to nutrition and perhaps to genetics as well.

Red deer in Scotland are smaller than in the rest of Europe, both body and antlers.
