My Mauser actioned Sporter i am buying.( Bloody PTA, 1 month waiting period).
8x57j
No makers marks, Coulour case hardened.
Twin set trigger & stock have been replaced with a 1909 Magazine/floor plate.

Has anyone have info on non marked 98 based sporters? Pre WW1 sporter?
I will get some better pictures when i get her.
Were Mauser selling actions Not heat treated to Makers? Would the adition of colour case hardening applyed to a already heat treated rifle make it stronger?
Any history on Small fry German smiths would be of huge value.

I miss the bar in the stock, that fits to the slot under the barrel.

So stock and barrelled action will probably not come of the same house.

The Argentine magazine box maybe a later ad.

Though there were a few civilian Mauser rifles made around 1920 with that boxtype.

The lack of any markings make it difficult to identify the maker and date of making.

I wonder if there are no proof marks , at least under the barrelshank.

Yes there are Proof marks. The magazine numbers dont match the rest of the rifle.
I will have to wait a few weeks to get better pictures of all markings.

Since we are just making guesses I'll make a few. Nice gun no matter what the origin.

Innovative & cost effective trigger adjustment by the way. The receiver and bolt
look pre WW1 and would be surprised if it was not an Oberndorf. The barrel profile especially
the key slot would also suggest pre WW1.

The stock and bottom metal suggest post WW1, looks almost HVA in style.

So someone took a barreled receiver and put it into a "new" stock for whatever reason, most
likely the original stock was "discarded".

Pics. of the underside marks etc. should prove interesting.

Very nice Mauser...looks prewar11 so it's had some updates over the years. Bolt is Kar98a (turned down handle...safety got a "red" dot on flag so that's been changed. Trigger has been modified with the adjustment screw. I see the bottom metal is 1909 Argentine Mauser. I would keep the bottom metal and get a trigger that sits further back in the bow. Stock may be a replacement as the barrel retainer is not there however the detail is on the underside of the barrel. A few numbers might clarify things. It's classic piece and I just enjoy it with a couple updates. Ron

Te bolt handle looks like a commercial Mauser one. If the action is a original commercial one intended for sale as "action only" to an other gunmaker, there should be the complete Mauser serial number on the underside of the receiver ring just behind the recoil lug. This number allows fairly close dating of the action, thanks Jon Speed.

Thank you. Yes i can just see a number when i inlarge the picture.
3 weeks until i have her in my hands.
I have .318" Woodliegh projectiles ,cases & die set on the way. Should be here this week.
Cant wait. I feel like a kid on Christmas eve.

Finally got around to getting more pictures of the markings
Under barrel.

RS in a oval , script letters E.L.B . Side of barrel flat has the Crown ,Crown N proof also bore size 7,8mm

Proof load markings, 2,75 g G.B.P. S.G.

Two sets of serial numbers . Thes numbers are on most parts of the action & Barrel

Markings behind the recoil lug.
from the top, just under the lug..
R Z R -
script letters, E B Looks like a 'E'?
J V 6
N 4 (These vertical numbers are Serial numbers)
N f 5
Y Y
O C (Or G) B

Some letters are stamped side ways.

The three digit number usually indicates when it`s made, 327 March 1927. It looks a bit like the Geco Mauser I got, http://forums.nitroexpress.com/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=208422&an=0&page=1#Post208422

Thank you for your use full information, bakposten.
In front of the barrel /Stock retaining foot ( For better a description LoL ) there is a 5 digit number

28645. It can just be seen in the pictures in the first post.

This number & the 3 digit number are also on the action. The last 2 numbers of the 3 digit & last 3 numbers of the 5 digit serial numbering are on most parts of the action.

Very nice no matter a "Brand" name or not. Just a well proportioned good looking rifle.

Denis Lyell used a similar looking, no name, J bore for many years early last century in Africa. Hes used the 227gr load and may have taken more Elephant than Bell, surely a more traveled and diverse theatre of adventuring.

Justin , The background in the photo's of your first post looks very familiar ,did you get the rifle from or through Gordon? It looks very good by the way, you will get a lot of joy from it I'm sure.

Yes mate, Sure did.
Its just a joy to shoulder. The sights line up for me like a well fitted Shotgun.
