Best bullet for .416 Rigby

Of course there are certainly different answers depending on which game you're hunting for. But say you should pick one bullet for a 416 Rigby if the intention is to hunt for i.e. moose - I mean, a game you intend to cook and eat - which bullet would you go for?

1) Swift A-Frame?
2) Hornady Interlock?
3) Nosler Partition?

And - which one would you pick if you were going after brown bear/grizzly?

Woodleigh are the only choice in my opinion.

I have had a lot of success with the Barnes x bullet on elk out here. both the 350 Gr and 400 Grn. At all ranges the opened well and retained almost all their weight.

I shot a brown bear with a .416 Rigby using 400 gr. Trophy Bonded Bear Claws in 1998. Perfect mushroom, knocked the bear down, he got back up, but very wobbly. A second dose settled the account on the spot. I've taken 3 cape buffalo with the same load only needed a second shot on one.

Another vote for the Woodleigh. IMO the Hornady is not as stoutly constructed, & I've had some issues with the Swift A-frames on African game. In my experience they don't seem to create as much of a blood trail unless a major vein or artery is severed. The Woodleighs and Nosler Partition are excellent bullets for what you have in mind.

For brown bear I would use the .416 North Fork soft nose, which is a step up from the bullets asked about in the beginning of this threat.

Woodleigh or Stewart bullets get my vote for best bullet, followed bt Winchester Silvertip (but only .30 cal 180 grain)........having said that, I've never even seen a bear, so couldn't comment on a bullet for that species.....just in general.

Do they die easily? .............I hate the cold, but the only animal I'd be willing to get that that way for would be a BIG bear.

........On the subject of bullet failures, I've seen more Trophy Bonded fail than all the rest put together. I wouldn't give 'em house room!

Steve,

Have the trophy bonded failures you have seen been with solids or softs? I have heard of the solids failing, but haven't heard of the softs doing so, at least as of yet. The rumor is that Speer changed the jacket formulation when they took over trophy bonded, making the jackets brittle and less reliable.

I have never had a Trophy Bonded bullet fail, ever. That would include softs and solids in four different calibers. I don't know about a change in formulation of the jacket, but they are pretty well thought of by most hunters I've talked to.

My trophy bonded bear claw(500gr) out of my 460weath.mag. mushroomed perfectly, retained over 80% weight on cape buffalo! Two oneshotkills. The PH said that they are good ones in his oppinion...
I would not use them in 458winmag on lion but every bigger game or faster calibers are fine for tBBC...

I've had good results with the Woodleigh 410 Gr solids and softs...see no reason to change.

I have a lot of fun with the Speer 350s, shooting coyotes from my porch. WHAT a VARMINT caliber!!

500GRAINS,how far have you shot the NF to?, have you shot them to 300 yards in the 416,just wondering how flat they shoot as there is no information on there BC,Kev

The best bullets I have used on Buffalo in any 416 are the new Nosler, the Northforks and Woodleighs...

1. The new Nosler will penetrate and make an exit hole most of the time on a broadside shot and will penetrate a Buffalo lengthwise..I really like them.....

2. The Woodleigh will do exactly what its been doing for a hundred years, break both shoulders and come to rest on the off side skin...

3.The Northfork is the new kid on the block and it shines..the soft will stop on the off side perfectly mushroomed every damn time, even if it shatters the spine it will be a perfect mushroom..Not many bullets will do this.

The Northfork flat nose solid will penetrate and pass through 99.9% of the time from any angle and cut a clean hole due to the cutting shoulder and it will shave the hair around the entrance wound for an inch...

Last but sure not least is the prince of Buffalo bullets, the Northfork Cup point, its in a league of its own, it hammers the big bulls off their feet and lets out a ton of blood in a hurry, kills like a soft and penetrates like a solid, no need for any other bullet IMO..and it kills plainsgame like a soft...It expands just a bit, or forms a cone, depending on its stricking velocity..It works as well at low velocity as it does at high velocity..It simply works....

Take your pick...I use the Northfork soft and Woodleigh soft in the thick stuff of Zimbabwe for instance and in herd shooting...In Tanzania I use the solid and cup point and the Nosler...But in the future based on the 4 or 5 buffalo I shot with it this year, the cup point may replace the rest indefinatly...

Over the last number of years I have used the flat nose solids and the cup points a good deal, shot a heck of a lot of buffalo with them and I am convienced the cup point is route that I will take from now on and from any angle....

I would listen to Ray about bullets for Buff, but for something as easy to kill as a moose or elk use Speer's 350g, it is affordable and as with all lighter for caliber bullets it recoils less. After all one of the benifits of using big bore moderate velocity rounds is that there is little reason to spend the money for premium bullets.
