Explosive bonding used for 1911 rails and feedramps...
      #216116 - 05/09/12 11:46 AM

Interesting article on "Explosive Bonding" ...had never heard of this before..

There was also an article in the May 2012 issue of "AMERICAN RIFLEMAN"

Yes I have seen demonstrations of this idea in other industries. Do believe it was somebody one day thinking about how blacksmiths can hammer metal and force/forge/weld it together so let's just do it quicker with explosives ( hey what a fun idea). Some people's minds never stop

Explosive bonding is a well known science, and a very highly precise process.

It's especially useful for bonding dissimilar metals.

While acquiring properties during a facility tour at a Naval Air Station I was led to an 'old vault' which had been used to store precious metals for electronic components.

Upon inspection it was revealed to be a Cincinnati Explosive Forming Press
Very cool machine, and very rare as it was nearly fully intact. It seems Cincinnati had recalled all of them, banning them from use (removing and disposing of the 'door') as they were found to self-destruct catastrophically. The process was akin to hydro-forming, but was focused on heavy sectioned parts.

Really neat process, neat to have seen one of the old-school machines back then.

I'm sure the modern process is similar, but done on more robust equipment.

Cheers

Very interesting indeed. A great way to make things lighter.

I can imagine it is a "very highly precise process"
having totally cut metal with explosives before which
literally turned it into molten metal by using a bit much !

Yes Nitro!

You speak of a very simple and elegant process.
Those of us who know need no convincing!

tinker

I didn't believe I could cut a 12 - 16 inch SOLID STEEL ROD
like a hot knife through butter until I actually did it. In fact, I would say that the cut was smoother than if cut by a saw.

I would love to try a layer of the White, 3mm thick C4 between two steel plates to see what would happen.

This explosive bonding intrigues me as it could have a lot of uses like if it worked underwater, could it be used to do the work of underwater welders who do the pipes etc on oil rigs ?
Would save a heap of time.

I think underwater the results would be akin to a depth charge. A little too exciting for the surrounding stuff.

Water will detonate under enough pressure.
I haven't done the math on explosive forming or joining under water, not sure I have the right path to get there -- specialized to say the least!

Well I wasn't thinking of having the divers down there at the time !!!

Although marine life would suffer.
