Picked up my G.E. Lewis .404 today.
      #215280 - 23/08/12 10:07 AM

After 8 long months my Lewis .404 Jeffery arrived today. I'm real happy with it so far. Hopefully it will shoot. The bore looks unbeliveably good. Some pitting above the wood. The wood is in pretty good shape also.

Eye candy.

Lovely old working rifle in a great classic cartridge. Worst thing about those old bolt rifle is the hideous triggers.

Very nice rifle but is that magazine really original ? You rarely see military-type magazine with safety screws in such a nice old custom rifle...

The trigger is a two stage and lets off very nicely. I'm not used to a two stage trigger and the long first pull, but it's very useable as is. I will most likely look for a better replacement.

Nice old rifle, I have several in that style mostly in 8x57. As far as the safety screws go - some have them and some don't, I prefer the safety screws myself, JMHO. The trigger can be de-staged & made adjustable at very little expense. --- John303.

Work on the original, or a Timmney or Jaeger trigger. I'd probably just get used to the original, as on my last Mauser. They can become easily mastered quite quicly with a bit of practise, if decent on the final lettoff.

The simplest and reversable fix is to lift the trigger past the first stage with a pad of devcon. I did this to try the idea in1978 or so with the intention of threading a screw in instead to make a neater job but this has worked well for thousands of rounds, first on the origonal 30-06, then a 7x61S&H and now for 800plus rounds on my own 404 jeffery plus countless dry fires. Certainly worth a try and you get a nice 3lb trigger. I liked it so much I had a nicer blade made but the basic trigger design is very good. Nice old Lewis by the way.

Good looking rifle and a good buy. Wish it could talk.

G'Day Fella's,

Casper 50, that's a really nice rifle you got there!
Obviously used but appears to have been looked after and not abused!!!
The stock checkering is still nice and sharp, which is always a good indicator.

When ever I handle or see any older hunting rifles and shotguns, I always wonder Where they have been and Who has handled and used them!.....?

Thanks for the images!

Doh!
