Wondering - has the 476 W-R been chambered in a Mauser?
      #214598 - 14/08/12 02:21 PM

I hope the experts here can answer this question - has the 476 Westley Richards with its 3.8" OAL ever been chambered in a standard length Mauser action? And, if not in one of the originals built for rimmed cartridges, then later on in a Siamese or similar action?

Thanks in advance for the responses, and good hunting!

I cannot say if it has been done, but ignoring other considerations, a 3.800" COAL is way long for a standard Mauser 98. Even 3.65 for the .375 H&H is long and with case hardened actions calls for less than top pressure loads as the lugs can set back. I am not saying you could not achieve this feat, but a P14 will handle that length much better than a M98.

Huvius,

I must thank you for the very strong inspiration that you've been, my friend. My Siamese [projects would have been much slower getting off the ground were it not for the fantastic gift that you sent me. Hope to shoot the rifle over the next couple of weeks and I'll post pics and details here.

Thank you again, my friend, and good hunting!

500 Grains,

Thank you for the reply. I have a few Siamese actions that I have accumulated and there is one for which I have no definite direction at the moment - hence the speculation on what to build on it. One will be a vaguely Rigby style 303 (it already feeds 303 rounds perfectly without any modification to the magazine or anything else) and one will be either a 7.62x54 or a 30-40 Krag. Huvius sent me a lovely heavy barreled 45-70 and that leaves one action. I planned to build a 50-110 on it and load it with smokeless, but later sold the barrel that I had bought off on the advice of another friend who occasionally posts here. That leaves me with this question - hence my post.

Would be happy for suggestions on what big bore round I could have built on this rifle. I am in touch with a young gunsmith in Texas who does very nice work and hope to take this particular project to him to work his magic on once I have decided on what the rifle will be. I am planning on a replica of the Harald Wolf Jungle carbine, only this one will have solid instead of laminate wood.

Good hunting!
