Australian Big Game rifle Club Nationals, Tasmania 28/7/12
      #214050 - 04/08/12 09:30 PM

The Tasmanian Branch of the BGRC hosted the 2012 Nationals at the Copping range on Saturday 28/7/12 in bleak weather with some wind, a bit of rain and cold weather. There were 32 shooters nominated from most states of Australia and two from the USA. It was a busy day with I think 7 seven events from memory. It is amazing when you have an event like this and you have .1% deciding first and second.
Robert Christopher 1st with a score 329.7%
Graeme Wright 2nd with a score 329.6%
Mark hibbert 3rd with a score 328.0%
Wayne Russell 4th witha score 326.8%

The Victorian team won the teams event with Tasmania coming second and USA coming third.
The event was well organised with a lot of work by Barry Evans and the bar for the next one has been set very high. There were some very old and beautiful firearms being put to good use by there owners and the Shoot was opened by M.P. Rebecca White.
As I do not know how to put photos on this site I have sent a CD of images to John who might be able to put a couple of interesting shots up.

Hi 450

Looking forward to putting an alias to a name. Looking forward to your CD of photos. No doubt there will be some good ones among them. I think more than a couple will go up in the end. I have yet to go through my photos, and may get to it tomorrow on Sunday if lucky. My video footage will need some work on it.

Hey, I've a new 7D myself now too. My old camera is packed away with some moisture crystals trying to dry it out ...

Congratulations to the guys and their good shooting. Too many of the same people going up to collect the trophies. We need some new faces up there in Darwin next year.

Personally I had fun just shooting and seeing others shoot. Some of the scores and the number of shots all in the black from a variety of rifles, ranges and styles (rapid fire was impressive.

Well done and thanks to Barry Evans for all his hard work and the other Tasmanians and other members who hosted and worked for the shoot.

Was good to meet member Alex Beer again, and also 9.3x74R (I think the alias is)/Phil for the first time. I had corresponded with Andrew Hepner in the past re loads for my .450 so good to meet him as well. Graeme Wright of course again and also Geoff MacDonald too. Lots of other guys.

Also had a chat with Ernie Stahlmann of the US, who I thought was the guy I corresponded with re the US BGRC in the past, but evidently it must have been Jerry, his wife, who was also present, but unfortunately I never chatted to her this time. The other US visitor, was the "Sheriff" a nice gentlemen from South Dakota. The US team came third (?) I think in the States comp.

Will get some photos up tomorrow at least to start with.

Hopefully we will hear from some of our "quiet" BGRC members on this thread.

John.

It was great to catch up to you and yeah, putting a face to a name is good. You will not be disappointed with the 7D, and I am looking forward to seeing your photos. The 7d will capture more of them in burst mode than most others.

It is great to see some up and coming younger shooters in this event and sooner or later us oldies will have to bow out to them, but until them we will try to make them earn their stripes. Many of the double rifles are well over 100 years old and still performing, one wonders how long these weapons will keep going for. The Ruger #1 is the prominent new rifle in various custom calibres from 45-70, 45-110, 450 3 1/4, 500 express and 577. There were also some nice 98's there as well.

Looking forward to Darwin.

Wayne

I'm putting together a photo album which can be browsed.

But in the meantime here is a selection of my own photos.

Wayne's to be added when received.

WIP at the moment. But loaded for those eager to see.

IMG_0804 - The Honourable Rebecca White, Member of Parliament for the Tasmanian Seat of Lyons, opening the competition shooting a 9.3x74R double rifle. Ms White is a clay target shooter and from the Redbanks Pheasant shooting ground family.

Good to see a young female Labor Parliamentarian who is a shooter and also opening the BGRC National Shoot.

IMG_0806 - Graeme Wright shooting in the Stalking Double Rifle event.

IMG_0809 - Ernie Stalhmann of the USA attending the Aussie BGRC Nationals.

IMG_0820 - Action reload

IMG_0822 - This young lady shot the full range of big bores by the end of the day. Well done.

IMG_0853 - Even a gunmaker on crutches can shoot big bore, and shoot well. Alex Beer.

IMG_0873 - Shooting Black Powder.

IMG_0919 - Andrew Hepner, the newspaper centrefold. Being photographed by "The Mercury Newspaper". Holding his 10-bore double. The Nationals shoot represented a good opportunity to show shooting in a positive light with lots of smoke!

Ladies and Gentlemen,

If I get anything wrong, names etc please comment, using the image reference.

Also on the album which will be uploaded, I would like to include names of shooters, and also some details of the competition, rifles used etc, so please comment. Maybe I will telephone Barry and Alex to run through some of the photos on the album.

A lot more photos will be displayed on the album soon.

Apart from the weather being a tad on the cool side for some of our guests from up north, it was a great day. Excellent company, nice rifles to see and see being fired, black powder fog, great food, and a day shooting our favorite rifles, what more could one ask for.

It was great to meet and catch up with friends and make some new ones. One friend I hadn’t seen for about fifteen years (makes me sound a whole lot older than I feel). It was really good catching up with him.

To see rifles and bore guns from the likes of Rigby, Westley Richard, Holland, Gibbs, Watson, Webley, Army & Navy, Jeffery, Heym, Merkle, Winchester, Ruger and a host of others being used was fantastic. The collection of fine custom built rifles accumulated there was terrific.

Some of the shooting was outstanding. Some of mine was just plain out but all in all a whole lot of fun.

One thing I love about the BGR is the willingness of people there to lend their rifles to someone else (and supply the ammo) so that person can compete in a class they don’t yet have a rifle for. That sort of thing is very common. Many thanks to all who did that on the day, very generous and very appreciated by all recipients.

John that camera technique could maybe be called a “quad pod”, don’t know if we could patent that.

I think the lovely Ms. White was using a Westley Richards in 300 Savage. Someone please correct me there if I’m wrong there, but it was sure nice to see a younger female politician there doing the opening honours.

Crutches did make it a little challenging getting to the firing line etc, but matthew69’s wife and kids were extremely willing gun bearers, and they were greatly appreciated too. Thanks guys and girls. And well shot Emily. Fantastic effort.

Now I’ve got to try to organize getting to Darwin for next year’s event.

Best
ALEX

Would have to agree--a 13 yr old shooting those bigger calibers is awesome..

Trying to get my gal to work her way up to a .375H&H so hopefully one day we can go buff hunting together in Zim ..

Great Job

Great coverage John and nice shots (no pun intended). Images 0873, 0897 & 0912 are Lance Eastwood shooting his blackpowder 500 express. Make not known but I will find out.

Alex you did pretty bloody good.
Young Emily was inspirational to see her shooting the bigones, including the 458. I know many grown up men that will not shoot one. She let a couple rip out of my 416 Ruger alaskan with no complaints. A very courages young lady, her mum did well to I believe with the bigones.

Gryphon, there were a few ales taken at the presentation dinner afterwards. A very nice drop it was too.

Correct Alex!
The rifle Rebecca White used to open the Nationals was a Westley Richard in 300 Savage and she shot it well.

Use the "i" button on the individual images to see comments if any have been recorded.

Use the slide show (if fast enough) to see the photos in "ACTION"!

These are my own photos only so far from the album built but not finished and uploaded a few days ago. I now have Wayne's CD of photos and will go through these as well.

Good to see that Ms White differentiates herself from the dross of both sides of politics!

An excellent series of pics! Mr Beer appears to mount his piece in the English manner to minimise the risks with DG.
