Personally i think the 85's are the nicest Sakos since the end of the 2 lugers. The addition of CRF is a nice improvement. I also like the new lines and classic stock and shadowline cheekpiece of i think, the classic and safari...

Only thing is that the CRF on the 85's is not a true CRF. It doesn't grab the cartridge coming out of the magazine. Only when the bolt is pushed all the way forward, but without rotating the bolt, does it grab and control the cartridge. Better than Push Feed but really a Push / Control Feed system.

Maybe they are a bit hit and miss. But the one I had a play with was a 270 and it picked the case up from the mag. Maybe it's dependent on the cartridge or each gun on its own, similar to problems with box mag feeding.

My Sako 85 in .375 H&H will feed empties. Easily the best feeding rifle I own. The price tag on the Sako quick detachable mounts hurt. I threw away the factory recoil pad and had a decelerator installed.

Thanks for the info guys,i got to see a 416 Rigby Safari, very well built. The xl action allows you to have an extra round in the mag(Rigby style) and the action is double cross bolted. The barrel has a solid qaurter rib on it with 1 fixed blade at 50 meters. The wood is exhibition grade(about blaser grade 9) and had very dark and dense grain and was highly figured at the comb only being set up for strength,it was typical english Rigby style, shadow line etc. This was a very well balanced rifle and felt exactly like a holland magnum mauser i had.The only thing i didnt like was the shinny barrel, but as these are custom built one at a time then you could have a cold rust finsh Also the action was the smoothest i have ever tried better then a mannlicher. These run at around 12.000 nz dollars(around 10.000 us) and the wait is about 14 months. If i hadnt known better id think this rfle was made by holland and holland,i have owned 2 magnum mausers in 375 built by hh and this was identical to the royal i had which was made in 1913. Now the only thing i have to work out is to go with a 416 Rigby or a 450 Rigby.cheers Mark.

Interesting Tom. Mine is also a 270 in the Bavarian model. It will definitely NOT pick up the case from the mag. I wonder if mine needs some work? I assumed it was functioning properly as the bolt doesn't have to be rotated in order to grab the rim.

Itīs good to remember that there is Sako Safari "old" (Mod 1979, action same as L61R), then Mod 75 and Mod 85. The older versions do not have a CRF action but Mod 85 do have a sort of it. Not a real with a gripping exactor but anyway.

The shiny barrel is just for hunting reasons; the glittering barrel isnīt so usefull when trying to sneak a big buffalo.

From what I remember of the original write up of the Sako CRF-on a 75model I think- even Sako described it as a cross between a full CRF and a PF. Not one or the other. Not having looked at one I cant comment on how they work.

I have a Model 75 in 375 H&H..it is definitely not a true controlled round feed..but works really well and is very accurate...

I worked on (floated and bedded) a Dr.'s Sako .375, back in the late 70's. After that, he used it for the local (Smither's) turkey shoots - winning many. Really ticked off the guys with Varmint weight .243's and .222's when it came to the BR part of the contest. The good Dr. won just about every time with his rifle's cloverleafs - 3/8" groups. 270gr. WW-PP and 70gr. 4064 - very accurate in his rifle.

Well im bitting the bullet and going for a Safari in 416 Rigby(seeing if it can be rust-blue as there made to order by there custom dept). They feed etc very smoothly and ill probablly go for an aimpoint,as thats what is on my 375 hh r93.I hope i dont die of old age before its done(last guy waited 2 years!).Ill try and post pics of the older safari i had,it was a 375 with q-rib twin crossbolts, rigby type mag with an extra round and holland type stock. It used to buzz the hell out of my teeth, but was very accurate and was very solid just like my accuracy international 338 artic super mag.I can remember when i got it Sako only made these(custom built too)in 300hh,375 hh,458 win and then 416 rem and i used it on every thing including goats so using it would become second nature....cheers Mark.

Good luck with the new Sako Safari, they are gorgeous.

I have a black bear in 9.3x62 with an MPI magnum stock on it. EAW qr rings and a 1.5 x 6 Schmidt & Bender round it out.

Not pretty in a conventional sense but I hunt a lot of mouse from a canoe at it's held up well after 3 trips and 2 little Canadian bulls.

The short bolt through and not being able to double feed it seem to make it a pretty good alternative to a true CRF. It picks up the cartridge after about .5 inch of travel, it does not leave the magazine until the rim slips under the bolt face.

I liked this so much I bought a 7 mm Rem Finnlight and had an MPI stock put on it as well. I also picked up a mannlicher in 260 Rem and a very inexpensive 338 federal grey wolf.

Good luck on the sako Safari - they are a nice rifle.

I have a Sako 85 kodiak in .375 and a grey wolf (lam stainless) in 270 WSM - both very well made rifles. I am sure you will have no issues with it and will have an accurate, serviceable rifle.

What happened to that thread ?

The link is now defunct.

The original thread was deleted from that forum.

It reported a "brand new Sako" in .375 H&H ,using factory ammo with A-frame bullets that exploded to parts injuring the shooter.
Very impressive pictures were to be seen.

Now it has been removed.

Cui bono ????
