The biggest O/U Rifle
      #21378 - 28/11/04 12:21 AM

What is the biggest caliber made on O/U double rifles that you know or have heard of?
I know that 470 NE O/U's are about but do bigger calibers exist?

I think the biggest factory O/U double rifle I've seen was a 470NE as well. However, I have two rifled barrel blanks on order for 12 bore. I have an old Valmet Lion that I'm going to convert to a 20" 12 bore rifle, with quarter rib, and front "MOON" sight. This for going into the weeds with wounded Leopard, and lion. Solid Hardened lead bullets crimped into all brass cases, should do the trick, and make a legal rifle for use in "Shotgun slug only" areas for deer, and moose. It has a single selective trigger, that in 30 years has never failed to work like a two shot simiautomatic! These rifled barrels will replace the smooth bore ones that are already set up with the sights.

Hatari Times No5 has a photo on page 8 of a dude with a 500 NE O/U but the photo was taken too far away to see any detail of the rifle.
Not sure whether it was a factory or custom built gun.
I do know of another 500 O/U as well.
I've never been able to figure out why there seems to be so few big caliber O/U rifles built. (.450 and up)

Mac,
You should contact Mickey as rumour has it that he actually owns a genuine PHC Linoleum Leopard Suit which you may want to duplicate for your quest into the weeds!

Valmet sells the parts to convert to double triggers. I did that with a Model 512 I had. The conversion was easy (I did it myself), and the trigger parts were not expensive.

Just a tidbit of info that might be helpful. I hate single triggers too.

Actually I quite like them.
It really doesn't worry me much whether there is one or two triggers so long as both types are totally reliable.

I'm too feeble minded to switch back and forth using double triggers and single triggers. I get on the single trigger, fire the first shot, then yank on the trigger guard and nothing happens!

Hey, CptCurl, Nitro does the same thing apparently so all you need now is a couple of double discharges and you will be his buddy for life.

As a matter of fact, I had a double discharge with my buddy's .500 NE the day before yesterday! My cheek is still sore. I'm not sure whether it was mechanical error or operator error. We have been shooting our .500's hundreds of times since April, and this is the first such occurrence. The rifle did fine after mauling me. Probably tapped the rear trigger during recoil. His stock is a bit shorter than mine, so mounts differently.

I had a 12 ga. shotter that would double on the rear trigger. I learned it when shooting sporting clays one day. The position called for a distant shot first and a close rise on the report of the first shot. I got it fixed, no problem.

I read about NitroX's buff hunt. Why is it that your rifle will perform flawlessly until the moment of truth? I sure would like to do a hunt like that!

Aint that a fact! Murphy's law I guess.
Thank the Gods of hunting that it usually does not happen too often!

You can!
Nitro is organizing another Buff hunt at the same place for 2005 and is looking for a few hunters to take part also.
The fact that you would be most likely bringing a double or two should ensure you a place but if not the mention of free alcohol and tarty women might help!
You never heard that from me though, ok?

The 2005 NE Water Buffalo Hunt thread in the Australian Forum has the details.

4seventy,

Yeah, I read all about that buff hunt and saw the post for next year's hunt. I emailed NitroX asking for more info. That was before I read his quote of the Boddington article. That article was a bit discouraging with its repeated mention that the hunt is for "rich Americans" etc. After readiing all that I figured my chance of affording that hunt is probably sniltch.

But, we will see. I guess NitroX will get back with the details of cost, etc.

Damn, 4seventy, you just had to notice that! Words have a bad habit of coming back to bite you in the butt, don't they?

It is true that I don't like single triggers on a double rifle, but this old Valmet has a single trigger, and I'm not sure the parts for the 412 will fit this 1960 ventage Valmet LION. Actually, the old shooter has had 18 1/2" smooth bore barrels with iron sights, for many years, and was made that way for a deer slug rifle for shotgun only counties of East Texas. That is basicly what it will be used for still. The new rifled Hastings blanks will not use regular slugs, but 12 bore bullets crimped into Brass 12 bore cases.

I hunt with double rifles, and even the small ones have two triggers. Shotguns are another matter, but if the parts will fit, I will change to the twin trigger system in the LION, if not the 12 bore rifle will be used as is.

Valmet no longer in existance! It is now TIKKA, but made in Italy, by Beretta. I'm not sure the triggers are still available,or if they will fit the old 1960 Valmet LION, but if they are, I'd love to have a set! Does any one have a sourse for these triggers?

Dugaboy1,

The last time I saw them offered, they were on the Cape Outfitters website when Cape Outfitters was liquidating the remaining Valmet/Tikka stock. You might try Jeff's Outfitters. I think he bought the guts, pieces, and parts from Don Shrum's estate.

Otherwise, Gun Parts, formerly Numrich Arms?

Hope you find them. Let us know.

CptCurl

Hopefully I will sending out information today to all the people that enquired. I got the answers I needed last night to the various questions plus an information page will be going out too.

I wouldn't worry about the "Bulletin" magazine story on Boddington etc and the comment "rich Americans". You must remember the market this magazine goes too. You probably do not know this Aust mag from America but its readership is average income Aussies and non-hunting ones. Paying for a hunt would be quite alien to them. Indeed hunting would also be alien, Claiming the hunting is done by "rich" persons is also a small way of putting a negative factor in the story but also justisfying "hunting" to the ignorant reader by bringing in money.

The price for the NE.com is very reasonable and a price that allows a single hunter to join up with three others for very good buffalo hunting. Plus I think it will be a fun camp as well. There is a significant number of enquiries and I think places will sell out quite quickly.

Purdey made two O/U 16b double rifles.
Both my 16b doubles (SxS, not O/U) shoot .666" diameter bullets.

That's the biggest I've heard of.

Biggest, as in diameter? I have a Westley Ovundo Super Magnum Explora. .735 diameter 730gr at 1500fps. Of course, its not fully rifled nor is it smooth bored, somewhat of a paradox.

Boss list O/U double rifles upto 600 Nitroexpress on their website but there are no pictures. I have also heard of one Merkel made on their 324 action in 600 NE in the 70s but I am not sure if they made any more.

Good hunting, everyone!
