Stock cracking issues with MS takedown rifles?
      #213742 - 31/07/12 09:31 AM

Hi--I revived an earlier thread a few weeks back about stock cracking on the standard rifles, in the hopes kuduae or someone equally knowledgeable might have some insight into this same topic applied to the takedown models. A friend recently picked up a nearly pristine M1903 takedown (round knob grip, flip-up tang sight, 15xx SN), stock currently not cracked, and we're wondering if there's something he should do to keep it that way.

Best,
Malcolm

Nearly all of the toothpick (pre-1924) stocks will crack, especially the web between the trigger and the rear of the magazine. However, I have seen the least amount of cracks in the 1903, most likely because of the lighter recoil.

I have seen a product called "wood hardener" used to strengthen and repair this area. It is a clear liquid that is absorbed into the wood and hardens like epoxy.

Thanks for the input, Kurt. Any notion how well this hardener works on an already cracked 1903? I'd love to come up with a way to make an externally invisible repair on my own gun...

Proper bedding of the entire action ie: recoil lug, and tang as well as removing the steel tube around the rear guard screw (if there is one there) will stop any cracking from ocurring. There should be no metal to metal touching or the action will be loose in the stock and cracking will occur. This goes for any action that is not PROPERLY pillar bedded. In proper pillar bedding, the pillars are one with the stock and then when the barreled action is screwed in to the Tguard, they all be come one together. Touching the action with the TGuard boss or a metal tube around the rear screw contacting the tang and guard is the cause of cracking, not the remedy.

Once cracked, epoxying and cross pinning are the only lasting fixes I know of.
