Lovely Red Stag.
      #213667 - 30/07/12 08:21 AM

I have just had a great two weeks in my hunting life.

Started with my first Australian Buff two weeks ago and was topped off with a beautiful double six Red stag on Saturday.
I am in debt to Vanders for both these opportunities.

This is the "upside" to these forums. To meet like minded people and share experiences.

We were to go out West hunting goats and pigs but that has fallen through for now so Vanders said, "I will take you for a Red as they are in bachelor mobs at the moment and your chances are very very good".

Getting to bed at 12.45am Saturday morning after some beers and b-llshit we were up at 4am ready to roll and be in deer country before sun up.
We road the 4wheelers in and waited for daylight.

In the twilight we could see some stags on the far hillside. Stripping off a few layers of cloths (4 deg with a frost) we cut around the edge of timber to get a better look at what was there.
Some cattle in the road made it a little harder and we had to pick a different route.

Watching a couple of 4x4's and a 5x5 feed towards the timber we thought we had "lucked out" on a big fella when Vanders looking through his 10 power Swarvo's said "here comes a good one".
He then said "he is a double 6 and 183m whack him".

Trusting his knowledge I didn't look for myself, I just chambered a 220 grain Woodliegh PP in my 8x68s and got down for the shot.
The bullet went through both lungs and the stag spun around, ran 25 yards and fell over dead. I knew he was good when I heard the words "F$#k yer" behind me.
After the shot a further 25 to 30 stags ran up a spur that we hadn't seen. We glassed them on the run but none were bigger than the fella I had shot (that's what I told myself anyway).

Some of the country he came from.

A wallow being used at the moment.

My stag.

Thanks again to Vanders for the chance.

I wonder what this coming month has in store ?.

until Gryph pointed it out.

Nope, can't see ANY similarities at all - if I take my glasses off and squint real tightly - like eyes closed, that is - otherwise - yes - quite.

Very nice stag and pretty quick going a twelve pointer on the first morning!

First an eight and ten pointer and then the twelve all at dawn twilight. Many guys hunt for years for just a ten pointer. Must have been a good spot.

Well done and congratulations for your first red stag. Not a bad one for the trophy wall.

He is actually my 4th red stag.

look forward to putting him on the wall with my other treasures.

On a North American elk, a 6 pointer is called a 'Royal' and the elk most people strive for and usually settle for a 5 point.
That is very impressive for a Red Deer Stag.
