An unfortunate turn of events
      #213266 - 22/07/12 09:15 PM

Hello all.

Due to the current political climate in this State and the subsequent economic downturn, our business is no longer viable. Sadly, after nine years, we must therefore close our doors and I must seek other employment.

Works currently in progress will be completed to our usual high standard, but unfortunately we will not be accepting anymore gunmaking or gunsmithing work at the present time.

Only time will tell if this decision remains temporary or becomes permanent.

I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Our web site will be taken down shortly.

To all those who have entrusted their custom built rifles and other gun work to us over the previous nine years, thank you. Thank you for allowing us to help you realize your dreams. Thank you for your trust and your business.

Once again, my apologies.

Best
ALEX BEER

All the best, Alex. You've certainly helped me get a couple of good ones up-and-running again, better than new! Thank you for your work!

Alex,
That is darned sad news. The pool of skilled fine gunmakers has already shrunk too much. I wish you all the best and hope that you'll continue to touch base with us here from time to time.

Best,
Ron.

The reason Alex's banner etc was taken off NE was Alex asked some months ago for it to be removed, so he didn't get new enquiries for additional gun smithing work. because of this.

Alex, Sorry to hear of it back then. Hope at least you get to exercise your skills again in the future.

Thank you all for your kind words and well wishes.

I will still be around here on NE, I enjoy it.

The love fine guns and rifles may unfortunately no longer be my business, but it is still one of my passions.

I do have a much stronger passion though, my family.

Although I still have the knowledge, the ability, and the desire to make fine rifles, meeting the financial needs of my wonderful Wife and children is a much much higher priority. I will do what is necessary to achieve this.

This not the end of me, but is simply the end of a chapter in life. Who knows what doors will open next and what opportunities will be around the corner? Could be exciting times ahead.

Best
ALEX

Hi Alex,

Up until 3 minutes ago I had socks on but after reading this "You have knocked my socks off", life does deal a lot of curve balls but I do understand that the family must come first but the shooting fraternity is loosing a top notch tradesman.

The two rifles that you completed for me as a keepsake for my Son on my demise may also have a change of direction as my my Son and his Wife had a premature baby some 5 months ago and he is still in hospital and the costs involved are astronomical and may mean that I have to sell some assets to help my Son but Sean is finally making headway.

I am glad to have at least in some way helped you get started but the way things are going in Australia doesn't help any small business.

All the Best my friend and please keep in contact one way or another,

Cheers for now Mate,

Jeff

.

The moment you die, the history of all time and the incalculable future will be as if it never existed. Our clocks wind down and it's how you live right now, this second is all that matters.

Your family is very important but so are you. Live and love life for every breath you take is joyous.

Sorry to hear that Alex. A massive loss to the industry. Hope in the future we see a new thread entitled 'A fortunate turn of events'.

Do you think it is a nation wide economic downturn in the industry or does it have something to do with Tasmainia being 'The Green State' and the homegrounds for Bob Brown and Co?

Tom.

Very sorry to hear the news Alex, hope you are able to 'keep the candle burning' via small private jobs until things improve.

Highly skilled metal Craftsmen like yourself are simply not being trained any more...

I worry about how these 'trade secrets' will be passed onto future generations with news of massive job layoffs in the skilled engineering automotive manufacturing and parts suppliers in the news seemingly every week, trade TAFE course closures etc.

Good luck for this unexpected next stage of your life, family comes first of course but I hope you are able to return to your passion in the future.

The custom rifle business is a not an easy way to make a living. One must certainly be motivated by something more than money. If the government isn't regulating us out of business, they're confiscating our potential customers' disposable income via taxation increases. It's sad every time a good man has to move on to some other employment because the money just isn't there.

A friend of mine called me the other day to tell me about a conversation he had with an accountant and a financial advisor a couple of weeks ago. He has been a builder of first class rifles for 35 years, and they were discussing the prices of handmade rifles.

He gave them a detailed description of all the expenses associated with running his one man business and the cost of materials that go into each rifle, and the time spent on each. They were both asked to go and independently calculate the how much he should charge for each rifle, based upon the wages and benefits from the UPS driver pay scale.

They both came back with the same answer. He should be charging $35,000 for his rifles.

He asked them how many they wanted to order.

One said, "I see your point".

All the best Alex.

Understood half way around the world Alex. I have done the thing this year.
35+ years at the bench, no longer. Customer base was going a different direction and so was income. In the end there was just no profit in it. I will dabble with my own projects, but finished up and shipped the Last one the day my FFL expired.
