A week in the NT
      #212953 - 18/07/12 02:17 PM

First of all I would like to thank Wiz for his hospitality and effort in showing Vanders and myself a great time in the NT.
Would also like to thank Pato for a days hunting and barbie that night.
Love those DR's Pato.
I will start with the pig hunt, then the fishing and Finnish with the Buff hunt.

Vanders was hunting with his 300WM loaded with 150 grain TTSX's as well as 180 grain Hydro's. I was using my Brno 9.3x62 loaded with 286 grain PP's and 286 grain Hydro's at 2400 fps.

Our first days hunting saw us chasing pigs.
We had a few hic-ups, broken centre bolt on the trailer and bogged in the Patrol after the auto engage hubs didn't.

Myself and Wiz with the boy's.

Here are some of Vanders pigs.

Some of mine.

Vanders first Donkey of the trip.

The first days fishing saw us catching Barra at Yellow Waters.

Man there are some big crocs in there and by the 100's.

Vanders managed to hook a 12 foot model at one stag by the nose until I cut the line.

We then went and stayed two nights with Spinna and fished the East Alligator River.
Many thanks to Spinna for room and showing me his Collection of Brno's.

Here is a Croc Wiz caught.

Couple of Barra.

We then fished a Billabong somewhere to Finnish the fishing off.

We had to push the boat through 50 yards of this stuff.A little unnerving.

The Billabong.

Wiz and a nice Barra.

Vanders with a good one.

Our last days hunting saw us looking for a Buff for me.
Saw plenty around this particular spring.

The biggest bull was on the other side of the mob of coarse and we had to be careful not the spook the mob.

Planing the hunt with the wind all over the place.

Part of the mob.

Wiz and I watching.

The start of the stalk.

He knows I'm there.

My first good Australian Buff.

After I got my Buff Vanders and I got into some Donkey's.
I flicked the scope off my 9.3 for the walk.
We were both using Hydro's with great effect.

The first Buff I shot was with Pato and was a young bull.

Entry that broke the near side shoulder.

The hole above the heart with the 286 grain Hydro.

A bush road train.

When I was removing the head I noticed something different in colour.
On closer inspection I found it was a Hydro that had traveled the full length of the Buff and had come to rest against the hard bone of the head.
That is some serious penetration.

Vanders shot a smaller bull for meat on the way out.
He finished it off with a brain shot with a 150 grain TTSX.
I found it under the ear on the other side.

Great report Neale of a great trip.

Were the barra muddy in the pan or clean eating?

Neale sounds and looks like a great trip. Now back to work:-) Full marks to Wiz, Pato and Spinna. Certainly is a good part of the country up there.

Some fine fish there Neale especialy that strange 12'one Vanders hooked.

Good buff you got. Playing the wind and stalking in can have the heart on edge, especially if the wind is a bit fickle.

Makes it all the sweeter when it comes good.

As to Vanders hooking the 12 foot croc, there were a few comments about being a window licker.

Hi Neale,

Congratulations on a very successful N.T. hunt. Some of the Barra are more than a single serve and it's a shame that they didn't become a meal.

Again well done and suspect that your now back at work hunting Queensland pigs in lieu of N.T.ones.

Cheers Mate,

Jeff

Neale, I noticed a camera mounted to your rifle scope, by the looks of it, in some photos. Can you tell us a bit about that? Cheers.

Yes mate.
It is a $300 "Go Pro" in a water proof case. It takes full HD video's and stills.
When you see the footage it looks like a video game with the barrel in the shot then the recoil of the shot and then the animal going down.

Very cool.
Vanders is putting a little clip together for me to put up here so stay tuned.

Hi Neale,

Glad to see Ben noticed the GoPro camera. I didn't see it till I looked for it. By coincidence I looked at the GoPro's three weeks ago, just on the net. And two times have tried to get some answers out of them. With no answer on their facebook page, and couldn't find an email address on their website. Lots of flash and marketing, films etc but not the facts.

But maybe you can answer from your direct experience.

Questions:

1. Does the GoPro have a optical zoom capacity?

Most films seem to be normal 1x views, as in running, skydiving, surfing, etc

2. How does the GoPro work in terms of longer video filming?

Again all their promotional films and reall quick and 'jerky', lots of exciting 1 to 3 seconds clips all edited together. I was told a lot of these digital cameras have trouble filming for more than a maximum of say 2 1/2 minutes at the time.

3. Do you have the remote control back to the camera? It isn't supposed to be available in Australia yet.

4. Seeing you've got it on a scope, how does it handle rifle recoil. I was thinking of taking home to Norway and Sweden?

These Go Pro's are everywhere all of a sudden, have seen them on current affair TV shows, used on platforms underwater, and numerous other shows. Most negative user reviews have been on them used for scuba diving. From my reading of reviews, pretty much 100% negative reports for scuba. But for other use quite good reviews.

5. They sell quite cheaply. They look like quite a basic camera, but supposedly in a rugged housing. What is your general opinion and experience with them?

Thanks. Could have asked you on the phone tonight, but didn't see the gopro use before on this thread.

I see another broken trailer. A common problem. We managed to bend the towbar on the trailer we had last trip.

I thought Yellow Waters was in Kakadu? Can you fish in Kakadu? Perhaps it is also outside the Park?

Yep huge crocs in those waters. I have photographs on a monster on an external HDD where the power supply failed. Hopefully the photos are still there!

Good photo.

Some good fishing there with the photos.

Congratulations. Full shoulder mount or skull and horns to be mounted?

Well done on the trip, fishing and hunting.

Makes me want to get up there again. Have cancelled the NT two years in a row, definitely next year, unless something to the far West occurs ...

Yellow Waters is inside Kakadu but you can fish in some areas of the park, Yellow Waters being one place.

YW is easily accessed from the Cooinda Lodge road which also has a decent boat ramp as does the South Alligator Bridge on the Highway. Yellow Waters is a part of the South Alligator system / flood plain.

Great photos.

I have had a Gro Pro for a year now.
It takes full HD stills and video and will film for 1.5hrs on a battery.
Recoil is no problem but does not have any zoom so under 20 yards is best.

There is no remote that I know of.
With the water proof case you dont get much sound but there is another back you can use if you want sound.

They are not something you would shoot a whole DVD with but add to one with.
All my mates that have seen some of the footage say "thats so cool, just like a video game".

I will just do a sckull cap mount as I am planning on a bigger one next year.
Have some great contacts up there now.
The mate I went up with is going back in Sept so he will bring my horns and tusks back then.

There is heaps of the park you can fish.

Great photos from a brilliant hunt.

Was there a notable difference with the wound channel caused by the new tipped Hydro projectile, compared to the old design?

Fishing in Kakadu generally isn't a problem there are a couple of spots where you can't but the main restriction is that it is all lure fishing only, no bait allowed to be used.

No mate I couldn't see a difference but you would need a big test sample to prove that.
