Double rifle accuracy..each barrel
      #21143 - 23/11/04 01:16 AM

What sort of accuracy is a good double rifle capable of with each of its barrels shot individually.

Do you mean measuring the groups of each barrel individually? If so I'd say as accurate (or unaccurate) as any single barreled rifle. I've done some handloads with a 9.3x74r that has single barrel groups that touch all three shots at 50 yards. Now getting the composite groups is the sticky wicket. Many times what might be the most accurate load in a single barrels will not be the most accurate in the other barrel, or for the composite group. Trial and error...

Mike375,

All discussions below are talking about 400 cal and lower (extremely hard to get a 1" group
from a 500 Nitro !!!

For INDIVIDUAL Barrels of a double, I accept 1.5" at between 50 and 100 yards as acceptable
- mostly they end up at 1.5 - 2" as it is extrmely hard to get the same sight picture all of the time.
(the above is generally with someone else shooting one of my guns).

I have a couple of guns that clover leaf 3 shots at 50 yards.

I am more concerned with where both barrels group as it is the 2nd shot that you need
to know is on Target.

Just MHO

Sounds like each individual barrel has accuracy comparable to the average bolt action big bore.

Does anyone with a double rifle ever use them as a "single shot" and/or have different loads for each of the barrels.

I had to use a double as a single shot for a while when the mainspring broke on the right lock on a sxs.
It was no fun at all and it felt like I only had half a rifle!
Couldn't wait to get it fixed!

Regarding different loads for each barrel, this is not a good idea.
I don't like the soft in one barrel and solid in the other for dangerous game idea either.
It is one of those brilliant brainwaves that someone had whilst playing with their rifle in the gunroom.
Had they tested the soft/solid idea thoroughly in the field they would have discovered that while it may work ok sometimes, it is far more likely to go badly wrong most of the time.

Mike375,

I'll reiterate what 4seventy says.
"different loads for each barrel, this is not a good idea"
In a hunting type environment, I can guarantee you won't get it right.
If a double needs different loads, get the double fixed (ie Re Regulated)

Regarding "the soft in one barrel and solid in the other for dangerous game"

The following applies to Australia and I am only talking Buffalo and Scrub Bull.

I start off with 2 softs as unless the animal is facing directly away from
me where I won't shoot on the first shot, All other shots (ie 15 degrees off from rear all the
way around to 15 degrees the other side) can be taken with a Soft. I can also get the 2nd
shot away that quickly that in general it is the soft type bullet that is required.

Then, when I reload, depending on the situation I MAY load a Soft and a Solid
but this judgement is based solely on exprience and the animal I am after.
(ie if I know the Buffalo has a history of aggressiveness etc etc).

This is just MY opinion from hunting in Australia and everyone is different and
no answer is correct for every situation.

I was just curious as to whether or not double rifle owners had any inclination to use and load for doubles in a way that was outside their intended use.

I agree about the risk of confusion. On the one DG animAL I'VE SHOT (Cape Buffalo) I started with a soft and a solid and then loaded solids for follw up. The woodleigh .470
soft performed so well (5' of penetration) I would have been better off sticking with softs.

Depends how slow you shoot - uneven expansion with rapid fire of one barrel only can move the POI a lot (5 minutes plus with my 243).
