Cookie expiration time is 1,036,800 seconds, which 17,280 minutes, 288 hours or 12 days.

Cookies also expire immediately on the old PC, if you log in from a new PC.

As for this being "the only forum that I have to re-log into every couple of weeks", what a load of rubbish .... quite common to have a cookie refresh requirement.

This was a recent thread topic which I thought '500nigel' whined about then too ...

I visit a couple forums this doesn't happen on.

Re-logging in isn't much of a challenge, is it?

John
I wasn't whining, I just wanted to know.
It doesn't worry me as the system remembers your password
so it's automatic.

It is the maximum amount of time these forums allow a cookie to continue without being renewed.

Personally I am more concerned about websites that put cookies on a PC that have NO expiration date as there is usually reasons for that.

Nigel, your PC system records your passwords separately, not the cookie. Just in any case anyone has confusion on that.

Sorry, my bad, I should have been clearer as I knew it is my Mac that stores the passwords.

John,

I have never seen it on any other board except this one.

When I took Website Design class last year in college, they did mention that some types of forum software did have this cookie expiry feature. It could be set for the log on to expire or for the cookie to expire. The advice was to have the option of log on to expire, but not have an expiry on cookies when you built your site.

Most browser now have some sort of log on capture feature that captures user name and auto logs you on when you access a site. It only functions if the user says yes to password user name capture and if the cookie hasn't expired.

I belong to a considerable number of forums, some I visit only a few times a year and every visit I need to log back in. Seeing these forums don't cost me anything and are also free, it never has bothered me. Some forums software are so buggy the searches don't work, the menu items don't work, I have to log in everytime ... the horror of it all ...

For our regular members, they would be aware this site is due for a major upgrade, no doubt some old minor problems will be fixed, no doubt a much upgraded forums. I think upgraded forums will have far more beneficial features regular members will appreciate.

EDITED TO NOTE: I have managed to increase the cookie expiration to 1,200 days. Previously the software would not accept a longer period when it was tried (?). I have noted the forums are slower now so will monitor this. It should not be connected I believe.

As a warning, if anyone has old PMs, say over a year old, or more than say 50 in storage (note a cheap 'club membership' will offer more), please save them if you want to keep them, as currently the PMs in storage are about one-third of the posts storage and will probably be pruned.

It happens to me on all the forums I visit if I havenīt been there for about a week or more but it only takes 10 seconds to log on so it is no problem, best, Mike

I've got a fixed IP address.

BTW had to re-log in myself tonight ... the horror of it - maybe to do with the change in the system I made.

Yes all sites require log on

Most sites have the option for the user to select how long to stay logged on and some allow indefinite log on.

Those sites that time you out all allow the the auto logger of your browser or an auto logger software to log you in,

This is the only site that does not recognize the auto logger. And NE is listed in the list of sites stored in the autologger. If you enter NE and have been logged by by the system, you must manually log on.

NE does not prompt you to log in when you enter the site and you have been log off by the system.

... Most sites ...

I keep reading all these "most sites" yet virtually every every site I visit seems to use different software ...

Problem has been fixed I thought. If the problem is still occurring for some, they may need to look at a solution from their own end ...

From another thread:
Quote:

DoubleD:
Well part of the problem is the soft ware won't let you stay logged in and won't let you auto log in even when you ask to stay logged in and say okay to auto log in.

The software logs you out after a day our two.

It seem every time I want to respond I have to log in.

....

This is the only board I attend on the net that has the problem.

Seriously, this forum had a 12 day log-out which is now 1,200 days. If it requires a daily re-log in, something is wrong from the users end. We can't fix that. I suspect the user's PC is not set to store or allow cookies properly. Or the user has software set to delete cookies each time they shut their browser or PC. Or their security system is wiping the cookies. This is required for proper use of the forums.

As said numerous times before, the software is due to be upgraded soon. Plus a new ISP. This will take more than a few seconds to login, in total several days work.

Edited: I will re-visit this topic a month after the upgrade and survey if anyone or how many are still having problems. In the meantime, re-login as required, or don't ... nothing else can be done about it.

Time for a different kind of wine I think. Thread closed. Problem fixed on this end at least.

Chill out time I think.
