The last of Mike's photos - Striped horse & Oryx
      #2121 - 20/03/03 08:02 PM

Here is the last installment of Mike's photos.

Striped horse, otherwise known as Zebra and the Scimitar horned Oryx aka Gemsbok.

A pair of lovely trophies.

********

Mike - thanks a lot for sharing your photos with us. I have enjoyed them immensely and enjoyed them just as much as looking at my own photos. Well done.

Sorry NitroX, but that is not a simitar oryx, but a giant oryx, aka gemsbok, native to southern Africa. The simitar horned oryx is almost white in color, and the horns are shaped like the Arabian simitar sword, and, in fact, are native to Arabia, and parts of North Africa!

Both beautiful trophies and good pictures as well!

You are correct sir. This Gemsbok is from Namibia. The wound you see on the shoulder is the exit of a 180 grain Barnse X out of a Remington 700-300 Weatherby Caliber. The broadside shot from 190 yards + - broke both shoulders, and he dropped on the spot.

Dugaboy1

Thanks for that.

I actually was just trying to describe the shape of the oryx or gemsboks horns as "scimitar" shaped.

I wasn't actually referring to the Scimitar Oryx which is pale or white and has to be one of the nicest looking trophies except I think it is classified as endangered (??).

I think the horns of both are very similar shaped. Gemsbok do make very nice trophies too. The closest I have got to them is about 400 metres and we weren't hunting at the time. Otherwise I haven't been in the right terrain for them.

As a collector of swords and similar "tools" I like the description.

NitroX,

Well looks like we will have to make a plan to set you on some gemsbuck for hunting next time you come over. I must say they are very tough animals as well because they are so hardened for their dessert dry conditions.
