No.5 - What to do?
      #211843 - 01/07/12 11:06 PM

I am in the process of acquiring a No.5Mk1

Pretty good condition, but the bayonet lug has been ground off and the butt-pad replaced with something other than the original..... so it's not quite in collectable order.

My current thought is to put the wood away, fit it with an aftermarket stock, such as a Boyds, and use it as a hunting rifle in the original calibre.

Any other suggestions?

Regards... Peter

Why not-sounds a good idea to me.

Some #5's shoot very well- some don't. Same action as a #4. Some of the guys here have converted #4's and #5's to .308's and .223's for varmint and 'metalic' match shooting.

In it's original .303 cambering, you can exceed 'factory' specs by a bit, while with accurately formed brass, just about match .308 Winchester factory ballistics.

Both my Jungle Carbines shoot well.

Thanks, fellas.

Thought that this would be the best thing to do, but always open to ideas.

Been looking for a good (cheap) SMLE for a while.
Should be one in every armoury.

Should make a fine using .303.

If you want to be abitious you could rebarrel it to something like a .405 or a .303/35, but why not keep it as a .303.

An Improved .303/.35 with 10 round box magazine would be quite a fun hog rifle, I'd expect. On a #4 or #5, it should match and slightly exceed the .358 Winchester.

Rebarrelling is an option, but one I'm more likely to take on a rifle that needs a new barrel.

This one doesn't.

I have a SMLE 35.303, I know of one chap in Victoria who has done up a #4 in 35.303 and dressed it up as #5. He's as wrapped with the conversion as I am with mine. A 35.303 based on the Epps Chamber would be interesting.

Another is the .303 Confederate Sabre, basically you run a 30.06 Reamer in short [ .303 Length ] shorten a set of 30.06 Dies, run .303 brass through the dies, fireform. Works with the .35 Whellen Reamer and dies just as well.

A .303/35 would make a useful sambar rifle too, especially over the dogs.

It would, John.

Although I'm pretty happy with the .375.

The No.5 may well get a run, too.
