Are they still around in Australia? Are they legal to hunt? Anyone bag one?

Marrakai has a photo of a funny coloured one. Reddy, Browny colour. He could shed more light on it.

18 months ago in the Territory I saw a red cow and calf and a yearling heifer ,all were red and all had ivory colored horns.
Didnt want to shoot any of them ,got one pic and camera ran out of film,
Not a good pic.

The rare and elusive "Red Buffalo" are much sought after by savvy hunters in the Top End. They live in the most remote gorges way back in the Arnhem Land sandstone, and are extremely wary and incredibly difficult to hunt. Only a select few of Australia's most skilled hunters have even set eyes on one, let alone brought one to bag.

Nah, just pullin' yer leg!

So-called 'Red' buffalo in Australia are just another colour variation. A lot of youngsters, say less than 6 months old, are pink in colour in some areas. Many individuals retain the colour to old age.

Here's a big old cow bagged several years ago east of Darwin:

..and here's a fully-grown bull bagged last year south of Darwin:

Plenty of grey ones and black ones present also. No big deal IMHO.

Marrakai

Another question about red buffalo . I am reading Capstick's book "Death in a Lonely Land" where he is hunting the Marajo Islands in Brazil. He writes "the Asian red buffalo is one of the most dangerous animals in the world to hunt. Period. Some confusion arises when hunters forget that there are two kinds of Buffalo in Asia, and to put the domestic caraboa or water buffalo, common as a beast of burden throughout the East, in the same league with the much larger wild red buff is like entering Joe Frazier in a Golden Gloves contest". When considering where to hunt them he says "Austrailia was a bit far". Was he talking out his ass? Maybe they have crossbred and that is why there are color phases? Just asking. Nice buff and continued success.

Capstick never let the truth get in the way of a good story! ...and that's the understatement of the year.

Pick something you're familiar with, by your location I suspect you know a thing or two about brownies, then go read what Capstick has to say about 'em. You'd never set foot outside your cabin again after reading Chapter 5 of "Maneaters" for instance. He talked them up, big time! Simple as that.

Regarding colour, lets look at feral pigs. We have black ones, spotted ones, brown ones, occasionally white ones. But Oh Boy! Watch out for those ginger ones! Twice as fierce as the others! Only the bravest of the brave dare contemplate hunting those fearsome ginger hogs! Pity help you if you should come across a ginger hog when armed with anything less than a .470 Capstick!

Pure bollocks of course!

Mick,
If this turned out to be true would it mean you may have to sell off or throw away your large collection of elephant tail hair bracelets and linolium leopard suits?

Never my linoleum Leopard suit with the leather football helmet. And NEVER my Beret or the monocle for peering at tracks.

By the way, I shot a White Buffalo with white horns, Brown Eyes. Not too big but vey interesting. I understand they are Polar Buffalo and quite clever. Are they particularly vicious?
