NT Buff Hunt
      #211777 - 30/06/12 03:57 PM

I just got home from a great trip to Conways Cattle Station in the NT. A great hunt with good results were had by all of us. Cal Pappas, Omnivourous Bob and my self from Alaska and two other gentlemen from Arizona made up the list of hunters. Cal got a big bull with his 600 Wilkes Double rifle. Bob was on a cull type of hunt with his mighty 4 bore single shot. I had late mail delivery problems with my NT license so I used one of their rifles fom the station, a 375 H&H Weatherby.
I managed to find a good buff bull on the first day that scored 97 3/4cm. A scrub bull and 3 donkeys also fell to this rifle. (I'll try to add pics later)
We did manage to meet 'Pato' and his son Steven at the station one evening too. He brought several of his doubles out to show us! Their picture album of their hunts that they brought was awesome. They've shot a bunch of buffalo!
The last night there I called Ben but he was still in Katherine and I thought he'd be in Darwin so we could meet on our last night in Oz. Bummer.
I'm fresh off the plane and dead tired now so I'll fill in the details later.

AkMike sounds like you had a good trip. Looking forward to the photos and full story when you recover from the flight home.

Cheers

Mike the above is a website code actually. To display a graphic.

Below is the actual graphic code. I left clicked on the image and selected COPY IMAGE LOCATION.

Code:

But as I found out, when a image code is messed up like the first one, it prevents all other images from displaying. Until I added the CODE code to quarantine it and prevent that bug from occurring.

Ok I think I've got the idea now. Thanks Gents.

This is my buff bull! I used their 375 H&H Weatherby to shoot this one.

This old scrub bull was dozing under a gum tree near a creek when we wandered by.

Left to right, Allen, (the owner), Me, Greg (Cals photographer), Scott, Cal, Steve(kneeling), Omnivorious Bob, Yogi, George and some eye candy! One of them was the camp cook and the other is Yogis G/F
Allen, Yogi and George were our guides during our stay.

My trip got off to a bad start right off the bat. When I checked in at the local terminal I was told that my San Fransisco/Sydney leg was cancelled (w/o reason). The agent managed to keep me on schedule by re-routing me to LA from S/F and then to Sydney. But the S/F- La leg was then cancelled....

I had to lay over in S/F for 24 hours. They promised that my bags would be held in S/F for me. When I checked back in the bags were finally located in LA. I had to file a lost bag report in Sydney with another airline they said. (The lost baggage was located the last day of the trip in Darwin on my way home.) Needless to say I don't intend to ever fly with United Airines again. I bought clothes and such in Katherine to replace the lost luggage.

We found old paintings by the aborigines on the sheltered cliffs and a cave near the property.

Towards the end of the hunt everyone wanted to shoot Omni-Bob's mighty 4 bore rifle. It was impressive on the critters as well as some shoulders.

During this hunt I also managed to briefly meet the elusive 'Marriaki' when Cal and Omni Bob dropped off some shooting supplies enroute to the airport for the return flights. He helped me with getting my old Westly Richards 500/450 working good again and it was a pleasure to get to thank him in person.

This was my first time hunting out of Alaska so it was really great for me. Cal and Rob both have been to Africa before so they are more experienced at traveling to hunt but I know they also had a good time there.
There is already talk of going back in a couple of years to do it again. (Except that I'll have to bunk alone.... they say I snore)

Looks like good fun.

Did you hunt South or North of the road?

Pity about the lost bag problems, and flight cancellations, airlines are often a pain in the ...

A nice red scrub bull and buffalo.

We were on both sides of the road. Mostly the north side though. ( I figured that out after one of the hands there showed me the Southern Cross and how to find south! (I verified that with a little compass)

Mike
Nice photos and some nice heads one some of those Buffalo in the field. I like that big sweeping set.

Those two yellow things you are holding, did you eat them ?
IMHO they are great eating and the Aboriginals love them.

LOL, That pile of rust used to belong to some poachers! They broke the rear axle housing at some point then tried to weld the housing back together and reinforce it with a chunk of iron fence post! (Very poor welding BTW) It broke way back in the back country and they abandoned it with a load of meat in the back. By the time it was discovered the meat was all maggots. They called the police and were told to burn it after any thing wanted was removed.
For some reason the owner never claimed it afterwards!

I liked the kangaroo meat! A very tasty treat to me.

The skull in the rear middle is Cal Pappas's bull. Note the 600 Nitro bullet hole between the eyes! The rear right one and the left front scrub bull are mine.

The left rear and middle belong to either Scott or Steve. I don't know which is which. Same with the small cull skull. Maybe Cal or Rob can fill us in?

I've been told burning poachers vehicles, even if in good condition is a common remedy property owners use against poachers in the Top End. I guess grass fires are common up there ...
