What rifle do you practice with the most?
      #2117 - 20/03/03 11:59 AM

Most of the time on the shooting range is spent shooting my Remington 541T(heavy barrel)bolt action in .22lr, topped with a Leupold 4X scope. I do nothing but shoot it from field positions: offhand, sitting, kneeling, and prone at ranges from 25 to 100 yards. What do the rest of you practice the most with?

I only own a 303 and a 375 H&H and I do most of my practise with my 375. I must say it boost your confidence if you shoot better with the 375 than the 303 but then again if I ever get the bloody trigger fixed on the 303 I suppose they would be on par again.

The load I mostly use is the load that I use for plainsgame as well 270 grain hornady spitzer at 2550 fps.

I just love my "Maggie" all my friends that has shot with it before as well love it.

If I'm at home I practice at least once a week with my .500 Jeffrey & shoot 105 grains of a local powder and either a mono solid or woodleigh softs. Which gives me 2270 fps with a 535 grain bullet. If I'm in the bush I practice at least once every 7 days.

I know I could cut down on the cost by shooting cast lead bullets, but every time I pick one up and look at them they look just so sh**ty I can't bring myself to shoot it through my nice barrel. So I accept the cost of the good stuff.

I guess I shoot my 3006 about every 2-3 weeks, but I hardly ever use that "in anger" It's mostly a loaner to clients.

Cheers

My 10/22 sees the most lead only because I shoot every varmint I see. It's good practice for when the time comes and it's that "moment of truth".

My favourite rifle for practising is my CZ .22 Magnum.

I use it more days than not on my farm, don't really shoot targets at all with it - except when I blame poor shooting on the sight in rather than missed shots.

Just lots of rabbits and the occasional hare and fox. Don't need to reload for it, relative cheap to feed and the CZ has a larger rifle feel to it compared to a normal rimfire so good practice. Nice and accurate too. My only complaint is the mid-priced scope (a Tasco 2 - 7x) which doesn't have good enough resolution in lower light when it is most needed.

With the dog took it for a walk this afternoon and missed one off-hand head shot at a rabbit and one dead on, so good field practice.

For big game practice I use my old faithful my Parker Hale .30-06.

Shooting the .22s is great practice. Besides being inexpensive to shoot, you can cap off 1-2 hundred rounds at a session, and not give yourself a concussion or detached retina.

My favorite gun for anything and everything was my .375 H&H, since I handload, I concocted loads for everything from plinking to elephants(even though I have never hunted "Ole Big Ears"). I used it for everything from squirrels, with reduced loads using 200gr Sierra's, on up, tailoring each load to suit the mission.

At one point I was capable of head shooting a standing groundhog(woodchuck) offhand consistently at 150yds. Now I would be lucky to hit a barn at 50yds, been too long.

My how I miss the old girl. Can't believe it has been over 2 years since I held her. I will stop now, and pull out the single malt scotch and grieve in silence.
