Ruger No1 .405 Winchester anyone?
      #211680 - 28/06/12 06:29 PM

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone has one of these and if they have done any hunting with the 300gr bullet, and what the results were like? Im planning on getting a No1 but in 450/400 and would like to use the 300gr bullet for a lighter load and for hunting lighter weight game, maybe up to kudu size, but am concerned by the low sectional density of the 300gr bullet.

Anyone thats done some hunting with either of those and the 300 grainer I'd appreciate hearing from you...and as always pics are welcome!

why not get a Ruger No 1. in 458Lott. then you can shoot from 300-600grain.
the smallest i shoot is 350grain, and it look kinda small in the shell hehe.

i havent had the pleasure hunting with it yet, but i am pretty sure the things i hit turns up dead. the most importent is that you handle recoil and get plenty of practice.

i would say a 300grain from a 405win is the same as 375h&H with a 300grain,

here is a picture, of a 350-400-550grain in 458 lott

Thanks Nitro, the unknown factor to me is recoil...the largest rifle I have owned and shot regularly is 9.3x62. I managed the recoil of that OK but Im not sure I would want to go a lot heavier than that at the bench or when practising.

A #1 in .405 will do about 2,400fps, mabe a bit more, with a 300gr. At that speed, the original .405Win.-type bullet might be too soft.

The .450/400 will do a LOT more, speed wise, but of course as with any round, it's recoil depends on how it's loaded.

The .405 would be pleasant to shoot in comparrison to a .458 Win, or .458Lott imho.

I haven't used it on game, but I would ask, what the 300 gr bullet actually is? What brand, bullet type?

In theory only, I would have thought the 300 gr .450/400 bullet would have been designed for the likes of a kudu and similar plains game.

A TSX in 300gr. would be quite surprising in the penetration department, expecially if driven at top speed from a .450/400, I'd wager. The .405 Winchester would be no slouch, either.

As to max loads for the Ruger with 400's in the .405 - you could easily best 2,000fps, maybe 2,100fps in that rifle.

My data shows 1,945fps and 1,928fps at only 44,900 and 44,300PSI. In the Ruger, that case can make another 12,000psi. That would give a substancial boost to the 'old' round.

Considering Benchmark will drive a 300gr. Hornady at 2,400fps at only 42,200PSI - my earlier guestimate of 2,400fps was considerably low.

What game is the Hornady bullet designed for? There is always the TSX, Swift and others.

There are no flies on that round.

Thanks for the replies guys. The bullet I was considering is the Woodleigh. I've read reports of the the Hornady bullet being quite soft and is best suited to deer size game. I hadnt considered the TSX but Im sure that would be a phenomenal penetrator and then there are the bullets from Cutting Edge and North Fork, which Ive recently learnt about. So there are a number of premium grade bullets out there in the 300gr weight range. I think thats the key when using a bullet with low sectional density is to retain as much weight as possible to keep the momentum values up. It'll be interesting to experiment anyhow!!

What do you think the range limitations would be with a 300gr bullet at about 2200-2300fps, using a low power variable scope like the Leupold 1.5-5x?

Range would depend on game. I have no experience shooting African game so take this with as much salt as required in your circumstances.

For me here in BC. a .40 cal. 300gr. decently shaped projectile TXSX type driven at those speeds would be an easy 300 yard moose or elk bullet - good iron sights or low powered scope, no change. Even my M96 9.3x57 is just such a gun using 286's through 300's.

It's an accurcy game and must be decided by you, during your practising. The gun has the power - you supply the accuracy and limit range to yours and the situation's accuracy possibilities.

I've heard African game is tougher, so be it.

I used to have a .405 Winchester and shot 400 grain solids at 1900 fps with no problems. Stay away from the Bertram brass as it's too soft. Use Hornady.

I currently have 3 Ruger No 1's, a 9.3x74R,a 405 Win,a 450/400. I would not hesitate taking any of the three to Africa to use on most any game with no trepidations at all. I would PREFER handloads with Woodleigh bullets against dangerous game. Would be perfectly happy with factory ammo against most any plains game with any of the three.

Matabele ,

I have some limited use of the Ruger #1 in 405 on whitetail . I hand-loaded the 405 up 3700 or so foot pounds KE ( the factory loads seem around 3000 - 3100 foot pounds ) . No problem with pressure in the Ruger , but definitely overkill for whitetail . With the Woodleigh or Barnes TSX , it would handle about any North American game . Do not keep any of those rounds if you pass the Ruger onto someone else . Jim

Thanks for the info Jim, I agree the Barnes 300gr TSX would make a fantastic general purpose bullet no doubt! Do you have any pictures of the whitetails you shot with the 405 you could post here?

Matabele ,

Attached is a link to two deer and a boar , The deer on the right with 405 and the left one and the boar with an Alex Henry 450 BPE double . http://s854.photobucket.com/albums/ab101/radinej/ The deer was shot in the chest and the Barnes went through and through with a brief glimmer of daylight seen .
