Which red dot sight have you mounted on your DR?

Hello All:

I am very seriously looking at mounting a red dot sight on my double rifles, two 9.3x74R and one 45-70.

all rifles are equipped with QD mounts so i should be able to swap between glass, red dot and iron sights.

The question of the day is:
What brand of red dot have you mounted to your DR?
What cailbre is the DR?
And, why did you choose the particular brand?

To those of you who find this concept repulsive, disgusting and heresy, bite my shiney metal butt plate.

I do not have a Double rifle, if I did I would put an Aimpoint on it. I had an Aimpoint on my old 35 Whelen and one will be going on my new Whelen.

A bit pricey compared to some but paralax free, and ruged/strong as all get out. A fifty cal does not upset them. Very easy to find the dot unlike some helo sights, batteries last forever. I used mine out to 500mts in my younger day. That was at steel rams but in the bush out to 300mts.

I have a couple of Trijicon RMR sights to try out, but need a couple of dovetail bases to fit them onto a couple of double rifles. Later for the Tikka DR I will have a Tikka bridge mount modified by a gunsmith so the RMR and a scope can be interchanged with the somewhat QD mount.

First off, I don't see it as heresy if you mount a red-dot sight on a double or dangerous game rifle.

The simple fact is that many of us have eyesight issues that preclude the effective use of the express sights. I am now 55 and I am short-sighted and it is a physical impossibility for me to see both the target and the sights clearly. However, by using a red-dot sight, which puts the sights and the target in the same visual plane, then I can see and shoot again.

I resisted putting dot sights on many of my firearms but, now that I am finally resigned to the facts about my eyesight, I am now putting them on many firearms.

The photos show two of my dangerous game rifles fitted with Trijicon RMR (Ruggedized Miniature Reflex) sights. There are a number of reasons I chose the RMRs but the main reason is that these are the no-battery models that use fibre-optics and tritium, so the dot is visible 24 hours a day and I never have to turn them on and I never have to change batteries.

I also chose th RMR because these sights are built to be combat tough, and they have been proven in combat, and are being proven every day, in Afganistan - so they will stand up to the rigors of a serious dangerous game hunt.

The RMR on the BRNO ZKK-602 .375 H&H Magnum is fitted in a custom mount that simply slides onto the BRNO dovetail and is secured with a couple of set screws. There is a QD version of a similar mount that I will be purchasing shortly.

The RMR on my Sabatti .450NE double is mounted on the scope rail that comes with the Sabattis which, I might add, is a bloody ugly mount for a double rifle. I am about to commission my gunsmith to make a new RMR mount for the Sabatti that will both look prettier and sit much lower on the rib.

As we get older we will ALL have eyesight issues and the RMRs are a fantastic solution to aging eyes so that we can all keep shooting and hunting.

Are the RMR acceptable as open sights under BGRC rules?

They are legal for BGRC but there is debate, at the moment, about whether there should be a scoring penalty on them. This is one of the business items for the BGR rules revue which will be held following the Nationals in Tasmania, this July.

However, I will be using them regardless of the rules as they simply make perfect sense particularly for those of us with less than perfect eyesight.

I installed a Burris Fastfire 2 on my W.R. 450/400 3". I was told that the Doctor Optik was the best however I did not want to spend so much money on a sight (3x the price of a Burris here in S.A.)until I was sure that it worked for me. So I bought the Burris, thinking I will replace it at a later date. It has been 2 years now and I could not have asked for better performance- a couple of buffalo can attest to that!

Is the dot on the Docter round or sharp or somewhat fuzzy/starlike?

In the photo it looks quite sharp.

It is very clear and crisp.
The Docter has an auto brightness feature, it measures ambient light and automatically adjusts dot brightness so you don't get the starburst effect.

John,

One issue with how clear a dot is, is the state of a person's eyes. So many people look at illuminated dots, from a variety of makers, and complain that the dot is not clear or perfectly round.

Quite often this is not a fault of the sight, but a fault of the eyes. The truth is that almost no-one has truly perfect vision and almost everyone has a degree of stigmatism and this precludes seeing the dot as a perfect circle.

I see this all the time, when showing people illuminated dot sights, and you can give one person a sight to look at, and he will complain that it is not clear and round, and his mate standing next to him can't see anything wrong with it.

My advice, always, is that if the dot is not clear or perfectly round, talk to your optomiterist! Whenever my dots start to look odd, then I know that I need a new pair of glasses.

One way around the 'out-of-round dot' issue, is to use an illuminated reticle that is NOT a dot and there is a Trijicon RMR that is an illumiated triange, because even with a stigmatism, you can see a triangle as as triangle.

Here is a Walther NanoPoint, mounted to my 450-400 2 3/8" NE takedown.
It has an auto setting and the dot dims down nicely in poor light. Not blinding.




The battery is easily changed, by the drawer on the RHS and it comes with a rubber hood for protection when not in use.

They are affordable as well, about $225 her in Oz.

Bob is right regarding the fuzziness being one's own eyes, or in this case my own.

I decided to test out the sight by taking a photograph and this is the result:



To my eyes it is fuzzy and even worse with glasses. Luckily so far I can shoot with open sights.

Bob, any chance of swapping one or both of my RMR's for a triangle version? They are both still un-used? I would like to try out the triangles and see how they work compared to a dot.
