Help me pick a blank!
      #211357 - 23/06/12 02:18 AM

Just got some pictures of available blanks for a new custom rifle build - a mauser 375 H&H- which blanks do you find the most promising?

blank 208

blank 207

blank 215

blank 218

blank 219

I like the 208 and 219 best but maybe 219 cutting the real piece as low as possible to avoiding this dark part in cheek piece...

By the way, could you tell anything about those prices ?

Its just a selection of stocks available for a custom build I have ordered - Included in the total cost.
So price is not a factor really.

I like 208 but does it really have the right structure where you want it ? Seems to be all pattern.

As poster above says, 219.

218 also took my fancy when I first saw it.

Do you have the opportunity to examine the blanks "in hand".

I feel all to many "custom" rifles are compromised by selecting a blank with too much emphasis on looks.

I want my stock to firstly have perfect flow (for strength then accuracy, if the grain runs from the heel of the butt, straight through the pistol grip and out through the top of the fore-end you'll have both). Next I want to have the density "right" for the caliber, use and checkering required. These qualities can only be fully assessed if you handle all the blanks.

There are only two ways to do this, visit on the supplier yourself or have your gunsmith do so - then listen to what he says !

Then and only then if there is still a range of options select a blank that looks like a million $$ .

Of course this advice is only relevant to produce a rifle that will be carried and hunted with for yourself and maybe some future generations of your family. If its just to be a "safe queen" them just select from a photo . .. . whatever you do, make sure you enjoy the process !!

Tentman

Agree, which is why I let my stock maker pick the blanks
then I pick from them.

208 just doesn't seem to have any grain flow through the wrist
- in fact any grain flow at all, as I said before it is all
pattern.

Tentman and 500 nitro, what do you think of the 207?

Isnt the flow quite good on that one?

207 is fine from what I can see, grain flow seems right through the wrist, no knots etc at all.

It's just not MY type of stock and not my type for a custom
375 H&H but that is ME.

Alright, but building on what tentman said about strength and rigidity being the first and foremost concern - would that be the "best" stock aesthetics aside?

The internet is great for sharing ideas but also it reduces a lot of taste to that enjoyed by the dominant culture, in the firearms world currently I feel the flavour is "american", they very much favour stocks that some would consider "loud" or "gawdy". This is in comparison to more "germanic" or "english" styles which are "quieter". This will probably start a war as taste is so individual - but have you really thought about style or are you "following fashion" ??

Having said all that if I had to choose without being able to examine the blanks at hand the only one I'd use is #207 - it is the same both sides and you can see the flow from the pictures. The other blanks may be fine, I just can't tell from a photo.

Cheers

Foster (of whom many would say "only has taste in his ass")

Ha ha Foster. Great post, much appreciated.
I dont give a toss about trends, I just want the best possible rifle from a practical point of view.
It will get dents and scratches within days of arriving, so I want a GOOD stock first and foremost.
If it looks good, thats a bonus.

Think I am edging towards the 207 now, a beautiful blank wont look to good split in two in the tall grass while Im riding the horn of a dagga boy with a triumphant smile on his mule!

Oh yes my rifles live in the mountains and the bush (forest to most)

I spent a great deal of time and effort getting my Mauser Model B in 250 Savage restocked in the best blank I could find, and what happened - second time out I ended up in some of the thickest cover you have ever seen, wet, very rough and very tough on stocks. It now has a few "garks" but hey,its seen a lot of deer !

207 for me. Go with the strength. It may not be as spectacular but great walnut oil-finished is beautiful, even if it is plainer than the others.

Everyone seems to be overlooking #215. Here is a piece of wood with straight grain in the forarm with a little fiddle back, the grain runs properly through the wrist and some spectacular crotch figure through the butt, that would be my choice. Should make a fine using gun, stable forarm, strenght in the wrist and easy on the eye's.

I have had a bit of a look at these blanks both here and on AR and without being able to see the top edge of 208 I would dismiss it offhand.

207 as has been said is a strong blank if a little plain in some respects, although that is what a pure quartersawn blank offers, but would make into good working rifle.

215 has a little too much grain ending in the wrist for my liking so is not in the running.

218 could make into a good rifle if the pattern was shifted so the forearm was toward the bottom of the blank and the heel was raised as this would correct the grain flow in the forearm and would also make into a good rifle.

219 If the heel of the pattern was droped and the forearm was raised most of the maybe questionable knot on the left side might disapere in the shaping and might be my choice if I could have a hands on check for myself. It also has excellent grain flow at the toe and grip cap area.

So- 207 or 219 would be in for further consideration in my book.

Von Gruff:
Would you mind explaining your comments about #215 and the grain ending in the wrist, I don't see what you are refering to. Do appreiate your time and knowledge.

Bob, I see on the left hand side view directly under the L grain end from there back and on the right hand side from the centre of the curve between the comb nose and the rise to the tang and to me this looks like more oid a rift sawn blank where it is half way between a 1/4 sawn and flat sawn blank that to means grain may also be ending on one side as well. It has to me at most a half wrist's thickness or good grain and not something I would want an a rifle.

Is this possibly because it is a plank sawn blank??

207 for outright strenght but 219 would be my pick. Good grain flow through wrist and some nice figure without been garish. Just my taste.
