Hydro job
      #210861 - 14/06/12 03:20 PM

Mate rang me the other day saying how he had seen a roughy by the track as he was riding his m/bike so he went back to camp grabbed his 7mm rm and a few hydros and went back to where he put it up and followed it up for the shot.

His daughter came back with him and was there when he took it,you take the easy with the tough ones.

Mate said it had an inch of fat on its arse like a saltbush ewe and the gut cavity was absolutely covered in fat with kidneys covered like footballs.

Well- one good eating deer, that's for sure. Is that an 18 month or 2 year old?

He could be older Daryl..his pedicles have the sort of length of an older stag,he could be just a mongrel or on the way back.Tuff ID-ing from the pic and the mate is not that experienced,I gave him some pointers and he will show me the skull later.

R303 he will eat well for sure.

I just finished three rump sangas for my feed from the hind I rolled on saturday...theres 40 kilos of snags made from her also..proper snags too with fennel chilli garlic etc 60% veni and 40% pork.

Saw a few sambar tonight after a tough climb..here`s a couple that fed out as part of nine deer seen.

Might post the other pics later, the better ones!

Gryph - I'm not 'up' on Sambars, but his face seemed a bit short, to me, for a fully grown stag. He is a good size, though.

Its not the face Daryl it the pedicle length and the skull sutures that let you know of a deer`s age.His head suggests that he is no longer a youth!
I have seen other pics of him and he looks a far older animal.
I can only go on what the mate sent me though..oh yes he was virtually toothless as I remember R saying....that suggests he was on the way out yet still fat as buggery anyway.

Can you age Sambar via teeth once they are on the ground (well, those that aren't "toothless") !!!! like you can Fallow deer ?
