Parker Hale ? 98 Mauser barrel
      #210751 - 12/06/12 10:25 AM

I have a new old stock barrel threaded for large ring 98 Mauser. I had always assumed it was left over from Parker Hale M82 or M85 rifle production. It is 27 1/2" long chambered for .308 and a fairly heavy contour. It has a shoulder 1 1/8" long x 1.220" dia., tapers for 3" to .921" with a straight taper from there to within 1 3/32" of the muzzle to .780 dia. There is a straight turned area at the muzzle that is .748" dia. x 1 3/32" long. It has a 4 groove bore, with the lands about half the width of the grooves. I believe it has the smoothest bore inside that I have seen. One thing that really puzzles me though, I checked the twist three times, with tight fitting patches on two different cleaning rods and I measured 1 turn in 14" all three times. I had read that Parker Hale barrels were 1 in 12" twist, So does anyone know what I have? What bullets would a barrel with this twist be designed for? Should I keep it .308?

TX1200 match barrel if a PH? That's a suggestion. Mine was marked TX1200.

14" twist sounds suspiciously like it could have been meant for the 147gr. CDN or Nato round.

Have you mic'd the bore and groove? Calipers are not accurate enough - if it mic's .307" groove or .3065" it just might be for that mil-spec ammo - however 14" still sounds slow.

In 14", it should shoot up to 140gr. normally shaped bullets, but I'd try the 125gr. TNT Speers (beautiul bullet) or light Sierra match bullets.

It might even shoot a 150gr. Spitzer, but maybe not. Only one way to find out.

Daryl, Thanks for your reply. I thought when I checked it that the 14" twist was odd. I haven't slugged the barrel yet, but I did measure it several times with a couple of different small hole gauges and a tenth mic. The lands are narrow enough that my small hole gauges will work between them. I'm getting .3074" - .3075" groove dia. The bore measures .2994" - .2995". The only markings on this barrel is a large Z stamped on the breech face. It doesn't look like a CZ stamp, it is plainly just a Z. So I am assuming it may be an inspecters mark. A fellow I talked to last nite after I posted here suggested that it might shoot the Sierra 155gr boattail Palma Match bullets really well. I don't know. I was going to use this barrel on a Mauser tactical/target rifle build that I am doing, but I'm not sure now what I want to do as I have other barrel options. I still think this is the smoothest barrel I've ever looked thru though. Thanks Again.

Is it a Z in a circle or similiar? Could be an older Brno mark

CarlsenHighway, That was my first thought as well. I looked at the mark again and it is clearly just a Z. It is stamped fairly deeply and there is no evidence of anything other than the Z. Thank you for your reply.

Thanks Igorrock, its possible. I did find a 2005 post on Sniper Central that was of interest. The poster refered to a book by Clive M. Law "Without Warning", a book on Canadian Sniper Equipment. Law mentioned that the Canadian Model C3 sniper Rifle, Parker Hale M82, when first issued had 1-14 twist barrels 26" long. Rebuilding was begun in Feb. 1986 and finished in Feb. 1992. The rifles were rebarreled with a 1-12 twist barrel to shoot 168gr. bullets and the optics were changed as well. As I was originally told that this barrel may have been from Parker Hale maybe it was an early Canadian C3 barrel. Thanks Again.
