Does the .458WM actually do the job on buffalo?

Well, yep. It does.

I used Woodleigh 500 grain FMJs given their wind by 70 grains of AR2206H for a blazing-fast 2063fps. I don't want to talk about my first shot out of embarrassment, but my second one just moments later dropped him, and shots three and four were probably unnecessary.

Some of you may remember the drama I had when I bought this second-hand Rifleman's Rifle (Winchester Model 70). It now works a treat and now all of my rifles have accounted for at least one buffalo each.

You might just be able to make-out that there's a missing chunk of right horn, with a bit of a groove to it. Methinks somebody tried for a small-calibre head-shot at some stage in his life.

And was a bit nervous or a bad shot.

Good going Ben. Glad to see the Mod70 is performing like it should.

You certainly live in a good part of the hunting world. As I said in the Buff thread don't tell me that was just outside your back door.

Cheers

Greg

Nah, a bit further than that! And, yep, it is paradise at this time of the year. By the time we made it back to the car, the thermometer in the car showed a mere 16C!

New rifle? Yeah, sadly I keep entertaining thoughts about new rifles, even though I definitely don't need any at the moment. Maybe I'd just better concentrate on tidying a few up that I have ideas for.

We took the better cuts of meat, and left the carcass as bait for the station hand to shoot pigs off when they start hitting it.

Good Job Ben, whatdoyamean Buff not in your Backyard, damm sight closer than to me. I think your right - Paradise.

A mate of mine has tricked out his Zastava .458 with a Laminated Boyds Thumbhole Stock and Bedding Job, fitted a Nikon African 1-4 x 20. Amazingly accurate, I've shot it and was surprised the recoil was moderate and I am not a seasoned Big Bore Shooter. I have only just got a 45.70 and I think the perceived Recoil is bugger all more - Boils down to good Stock Design and proper Fit. He was at the Range Sunday just gone with it with his 500 gr Load, something around 2000fps and on the money at 200 yards. What blows me away is that it's a MOA Canon

regards Jacko

Excellent shooting and result, Ben. Good to know the M70 is performing for you.
