Holland & Holland Royal Double .500NE in build (pics)
      #210476 - 09/06/12 05:51 AM

One of the great pleasures of gun ownership is the appreciation of how they are built. With this in mind I took some photographs during a recent visit to the Holland & Holland factory to see my Royal Double in .500NE in build for the first time.

There's not a great deal of detail to see but the barrels have been fitted to the action.

The metalwork as you see it above has had no input from me at all at this stage. It was in production and fortunately the few decisions taken so far would have been my choice anyway.

The rifle is scheduled to be completed in April next year and one of the first decisions to be made was to select a suitable stock blank. Having looked at around 100 blanks, slowly driving myself crazy with the random nature of such a natural material I selected this one.

The first picture shows the blank sprayed with water and the second shows the other side which had already been oiled, hence the difference in shade.

I intend to be fitted for the gun at Holland & Holland's Shooting Ground next month so that the stock can start to take form. I'm 6ft7in so I believe the length of pull will be at least 15 1/2".

I'll post some more pictures with progress reports when there's something new to see

Superb, thanks for posting. I love the lines on bolsters, one of the reasons I really like Hollands.

Love the blank, really nice.

When you say "and fortunately the few decisions taken so far would have been my choice anyway."

What do you mean "would have been my choice".

What decisions have been made ?

Thank you.

Decisions already made are calibre, barrel length and barrel profile. Obviously the calibre was the easy one, but I wanted 24" barrels and a target weight of 11lbs which is consistent with the existing barrel profile.

Looking forward to seeing the gun come along to completion and congratulations of course.

Congratulatons!! There are few among us able to say that they have "been there" throughout the building of their gun. It's great that they allow you to 'invade' their production facility and observe progress as well as take pictures. Good job and great pics. Beautiful wood too!

The greater joy is hunting with a rifle that you have build or had a hand in building.I certainly feel different towards these guns...its like living in a home that you have build.

Thank you for sharing these pictures, Maximus. Few things are more spectacular than seeing a masterpiece in the making. Please do keep the pictures coming!

Good hunting and advance congratulations!

Rolande,

I'm interested to get your views on what constitutes your "extra finish" engraving for an H&H. I presume you did your schooling at Fabrique Nationale as some of your earlier examples are reminiscent of that source.

BTW have you seen any of Harry Kell's work (from the 1920-1930s) and do you cut the work with both hands?

Regards

Maximus,

Your rifle looks stunning & can't wait to see how much progress has been made!
In my opinion, a H&H Royal in 500 NE is the ultimate elephant rifle. Better start
planning on a few safaris to break it in! Congrats

I don't want a pad that grips too well, hence the leather covering. Most H&H doubles are made with leather covered pads.

As promised here is Part I of my report of the Holland & Holland factory visit, with of course some pictures of my "in-build" Royal Double Rifle in .500NE.

The Holland & Holland factory on Harrow Road London was built by Henry Holland in 1898 and externally hasn't really changed a great deal since that time. Although modern technology has brought some improvements to production techniques again surprisingly little has changed over the last 100 years. H&H make every metal component of their guns in-house and all stock work and finishing is also done here. Indeed it is the painstaking attention to details that really impressed me with the duration of most tasks taking weeks and moths rather than hours or days. It takes 1000 man hours to build a H&H Double Rifle and that investment in time by highly-skilled craftsman makes for a fabulous end product.

Rather than write pages of words, I'll post some photos (all taken with the permission of H&H) with brief explanations.

Every action starts its life looking like this.

Then after some machining looks like this.

A .500NE blank showing chopper lump construction. Lumps are top and bottom for most calibres now to allow for left or right barrel location.

A .700 H&H blank.

4-bore anyone?

A barrel being rifled.

Rifling parameters.

We then moved into stocking where I was to set eyes on my newly stocked Royal for the first time. It was a nervous moment, especially because the stock proportions were quite different from the usual design with a 15 3/4" LOP and extended pistol grip, amongst other changes. I need not have been concerned.

Beautiful. The pad will be covered with black leather to ensure it doesn't snag on clothing.

To say I'm pleased would be an understatement. Only another 6 months to wait before it's finished!

I'll post the 2nd part of the factory tour with more pictures as soon as I have a little more time.

What a beautiful rifle that will be. The machine being used to rifle that barrel looks like it might have been made around WWI or earlier!! But you can't argue with success. I would love to just sit and watch some of there craftsman at work. What an education that would be.

Nice report, Like I can see you had the chance to visit all manufactory from the underground to the top level ;-)
The first time I had visit the factory, I feel all History who stay on the wall.
In six month you will have in your hand a lot of hours of hand work made by craftsman who like perfect job ;-)
I am waiting the others pictures.... and of course to see the end of the history.
Three years ago I had created a project for Africa engraving web page

A little story Maximus, I too have been round the factory a couple of times. Years ago in the staff canteen there was a BIG white rhino head on the wall. It is now on the wall at the Holland shooting school but with a replacement fibreglass horn (you can´t tell). When it was in the canteen in the 1980´s and rhino horn prices went mad, the staff walked in one Monday and someone had broken into the canteen through a window and hacked off the horn !!! best, Mike

Part II of my visit to the Holland & Holland factory in London last month.

Having ran ahead of normal production stages to see my rifle, we stepped backwards to visit the assembly floor. This is where most of the gunsmithing takes place.

Barrels with action components in containers waiting to be assembled and fitted.

Of great interest was the time consuming process of smoking and filing for perfect barrel to action fit.

Next, the engraving area. Although H&H often employ the services of independent engravers they do have 3 full-time engravers in-house. The quality of their work is fabulous.

Creating gold inlayed lettering is far more complicated than I thought.

Next a quite sad moment when we saw the very last action engraved for H&H by the late and great Philippe Grifnée.

Finally, demonstrating their skill as a true bespoke gun-maker, we were shown a triple barrelled side by side (by side?) shotgun, 2 years in the making with a single selective trigger actions. The complexity of this work boggles the mind and after 2 years in build completion date and final price are as yet unknown.

The overriding impression during the factory visit was not only the craftsmanship of the gun-makers but the sheer number of hours dedicated to each task. Time at Holland & Holland is measured in weeks and months, not hours and days, and it shows in their final product. No less than 1,000 man hours will be invested in my Royal Double Rifle, and now I have a full appreciation of why it takes so long to produce such a fine gun.

I hope you enjoyed the reports

Great pictures. I too have been to the H&H factory but I didn't take photos. I won't forget to the next time. It is absolutely amazing how a rough and rusty chunk of steel becomes a fit and finished H&H double. Your gun will really be something special.

I haven't posted an update for a while but the factory are still on target for delivery at the end of April.

To give you an insight into how meticulous the production process is, take a look at the outstanding work list for my rifle.

Simply incredible. Far too rich for my blood, but the tradition and the craftsmanship is awesome to behold.

Payed a visit to Holland and Holland in New York about three weeks ago ! after looking at your photos of the actions and chopper lumps I can see why they cost so much ! There was a ''cheap'' M98 500 Jeffery there for a about $37000.00 ,Double 500/465 @ $185000.00 about the same price for shotguns, including a little over under 410 !

Well it's like buying a hand built car. Guaranteed to work out of the box, at least

I am sure one could find a gunsmith that could do a similar rifle for one forth of the price, but it wouldn't be a Holland & Holland. The "Holland & Holland" add a bigger resale value plus you buy a piece of English history.

Btw. A very very beautiful rifle. If I had the funding I would love to have H&H do me backactioned rifle with Jones underlever.

Maximus,

It's been a while since you updated us on this build.

Are you too busy shooting it to include us??

Spare a photo and a thought for "we in the cheap seats".
