Opinions on 376 Steyr
      #20879 - 14/11/04 10:36 AM

I am thinking about building a 376 Steyr on a Yugo Mauser action as my first big bore rifle. (I can't afford a new gun anytime in the forseeable future) I've read that it's ballistically equal to the H&H. I want real world opinions. How has it actually performed on game? I can't think of any reason why it would be anything other than great on any game.

If you can find someone who subscribes to African Hunter magazine, there were several articles on this cartridge, the rifle, and how it performed in Africa, a couple of years ago. Not my cup of tea, but I remember the write-ups were quite positive. Could be promotional though, you would need to know who the authors were and any association with the company.

I'll have a look for the references when I get time, or someone here may have them to hand.

Meanwhile, just ring up Jeff Cooper if you want an 'unbiased' positive opinion!

Bloodnativ,

Firstly, what country are you in ?

A couple of questions for my own knowledge.

Unless you are a gun smith and can make a chamber reamer, how can building a 376 Steyr
on a Yugo Mauser action be cheaper / lower cost than buying a used 375H&H
- ie Brno 602 in 375H&H - In Australia between AUD$500 and $1000 depending on condition,
scoped etc ?

If of course you have to buy a 376 Styr Reamer, again, additional cost.

Then if you take into account you need custom dies in 376 Steyr which cost a lot more
thank 375H&H dies, to me it doesn't add up.

Look forward to your reply.

An article on the .376 Steyr on African Hunter magazine.

http://www.african-hunter.com/the__376_steyr.htm

Personally I would go for a 9.3x62 or a 9.3x64 or the .375 H&H Mag. The cartridge is not a classic and has never gained any popularity so is likely to die off.

A new barrel from E.R. Shaw threaded and short-chambered $135.00US. Here in the US we can RENT chamber reamers for $33.00US. Loading dies are $50-$55.00US. I do all the work myself. Throw on a new stock (roughly $125-$150.00US) and I'm good to go. I already have a spare scope and rings. That still beats the price of even a well used rifle and I get another project to keep me busy. I can also break up the cost into more manageable increments. To boot, the most dangerous game I'm likely to be hunting anytime soon is some pigs.

Having 2 kids (and a 3rd on the way) and only 1 income doesn't leave much to go buy new guns. I'm not complaining or anything like that just stating the situation. I want an H&H so bad I can taste it. I just can't afford it.

From what I have read, opinions range from "just as good as the H&H" to "about as useless as a 'roid". If you hunt DG even on a semi-regular basis I guess it would be much less than ideal. I know it would for me.

Bloodnativ,

Thanks, now I understand.

I wish I had your skill with tools / equipment as I would like
to be able to do some of my gunsmithing / rebarreling.

It's really not hard 'Nitro. There are several good books and instructional vids out. Practice on some old surplus scrap to get a feel for how the tools react with the metal and go slow. There's nothing like shooting that first good group with a rifle you barreled yourself.

I've never been one to knock an exotic rifle or calibre if it suits the owner. At least you will have something different from anyone else. It certainly would be a usuable rifle, mild enough and still kill well.

Bullets would be easy to get. Cases I believe are the same as the 9.3x64mm (?) and those might be a little harder. I would price some cases before I got too committed especially if you are like me and plan to buy 200 plus for any rifle.

It is a dandy caliber, but I doubt that it will fly, and is morebound...I would prefer a 375 H&H as it will be around forever, and that 1/2" or less bolt throw isn't a problem for me...I can still chew gum and walk, so I won't short stroke a 375 H&H.

Though I have no experience with the 376 Steyr, I'm sure it would do well for what you want. Based on the 9.3x64 but shortened, it is the 9.5x60. If it is what you want, build it and post pictures.

It is a great cartridge. I have killed several animals with mine. That includes a cape buff using less than premium bullets. I used the hornady factory 270 grn sp. Although the bullets were not what I would have chosen it did the job. Unfortunately it is as Ray says. Steyr has done a piss poor job of marketing and the caliber will never catch on because of it.

Hi NitroX, hi all,

One thing to add to the article on AH:
As to my knowledge - and according to their website - Steyr Mannlicher is still producing the Scout rifle in .376

Regards,

I tried to buy one two years ago and was told they no longer produced the Scout in 376 so settled for a 308. Bloody annoying!

The act of taking a Mauser action and simply screwing a new barrel chambered for .376 Steyr is just the beginning of your expenses. You have to get it to feed properly, which will likely require a new magazine; plus bolt face alterations, extractor aletations, etc., etc....... By the time you get done, it will have been cheaper (and BETTER) to have purchased a factory .375 H&H in the first place.

I really think that the .375 H&H remains the ideal .375-bore cartridge. For one thing, it's AVAILABLE in terms of factory ammo and brass, and it'll be around for as long as there is big game hunting left in this world.
