Pride before the Fall? I hope not!

Here are a couple of targets from my day-old Searcy .470 shot at 50 yards. Boy, does the rifle shoot well. The regulated load is a really stout one, whacking my shoulder pretty darn good and my middle finger of my right hand is a little sore, but with this accuracy from 500 grain Woodleighs at 2250, I'll take the discomfort.

I'm on my way to try for a late season elephant bull on the 21st of this month. I hope I can be as accurate when the target is gray matter instead of paper!

It looks like you should send the Searcy over here to Norway for thurough testing!

Just be be on the safe side

As we say in Norway when wishing someone a good hunt: "Skitt Jakt"! (Litterally "Shit hunting". Kind of like saying "break a leg" in show biz").

That's good shooting all right, JudgeG.

Geez, Butch's regulation loads for the .470 certainly are stout at 2250 fps, given that 2125 fps was the normal factory load for almost 100 years! ...and probably realised 50 fps less than that in most rifles. What is the weight of the Searcy .470? I'd like at least 11 pounds to soak that up!

Mine is 10 pounds, 11 oz. It is a joy to carry, but you know when you shoot it from the bench. Actually, I shot it several times today off-hand. It really wasn't that bad, albeit, I had a sissy pad on my shoulder.

One good thing about Butch's guns; while he doesn't promise the same, most of them will regulate with a load 200 fps less, also. Ray Atkinson's shot well at 2020 fps and he shot three (maybe two?) buffalo with his and killed them dead as dirt with the new North Fork Cup Point monolithics.

I've got just five days and a wake-up before I'm on my way to try for an elephant. Can't wait!

May I ask what safari company is taking you on the hunt? What size of elephant have they said are in the area? Is the foliage thick to ensure close shots?

I agree, and I definately don't want to try those loads in my 9 pounder!
