New Mauser Model B's in Don S's collection
      #208159 - 08/05/12 11:18 PM

Don S has sent me pictures of two new Model B Mausers that he recently acquired. From his e-mail:

Quote [Attached are photos of a couple of Type B Mausers that have
recently found their way into my collection. Both are special but for
different reasons. The first is an all original matching numbered 1914
square bridge in 8x57J complete with factory mounted Voigtlander scope
in fine cond. The second is a plain jane original matching numbered
1939 in the very rare 6.5x55 Swede in well used but not abused cond. If
you could post these in the NE Mauser Archive on my behalf, it would be
greatly appreciated. I hope the members will also enjoy viewing them.] End quote.

Good hunting and happy viewing!

My thanks to Don for sharing pictures of the treasures in his collection as always. I hope he gets many more fine Mausers in his gunsafe in the future!

"justcurious". A while back you stated that in 30 years of collecting you had never seen a photo of an original factory Oberndorf chambered in 6.5x55. Well, this post is for you.

Beautiful rifles. Love the Swede, and it's the only one I've ever seen as well.

A rare item and in very good shape. Congrats

Good looking Swede, congrats on your persistence. I am still looking for a 9.3x57

It took some convincing, but Ken was kind enough to entrust this Swede to my care for a while. Thanks again.

There actually were a Mauser in 6,5x55 sold in Sweden which looks exactly like this one, on an auction a couple of years back (which I for some stupid reason missed and never bid on):

Number 121798.

Interesting, the SN's are pretty close. I'll bet there are still some original 6.5x55 and 9.3x57 Oberndorf's floating around Sweden somewhere.

Yes, there probably is, but seldom in this condition. The worst thing is that it went under the club for ~Ģ580...

If this is an original matching number Oberndorf "African" model with handguard,(and it appears to be just that) it is the deal of the century. Value would be in the $8000-10000 range here in the US.

Today I was checking this mauser. All steel parts seems to be in very good condition, receiver (has text Mauser Obendorf) and bolt in matching numbers. I couldīt check the barrel numbers but both sights are original and in very good condition. Stock seems to have some scratches but only in lacquer, none through of it.

I'd buy the 6.5x55 'African' for sure. It's worth 1250 EUR and more in any condition if it's original.

Chances are that the barrel will have a matching number as well. Could you possibly get some better photos of the rifle and the visible markings? My recommendation is to buy it without hesitation at that price. This could be the best investment you ever make. There isn't a Mauser collector anywhere that wouldn't want this in their collection.

I donīt want to tell seller that he has a special rifle because after that the price would be much much more. I just try to find someone who wants to invest to rifle but itīs not so easy. But if I find Iīll sell this rifle in HOLTS auction in London.

Examples of this very rare rifle can be seen in Speed's "Oberndorf Sporting Rifles" book on page 161, and his "Archive" book on page 534. I only wish it were for sale on this side of the Atlantic.

I know those books very well and have the first mentioned it my book shelf. It seems that enough money would find so if everything goes well, I can send better pictures quite soon...

So; I bought the rifle yesterday. It is really matching numbers, the last two digits of serial numbers can found very many places. The BU proof marks and caliber markings (land, groove and rate of twist) are underside of the barrel, just fore the action. It seems that 6,5x55 is the original caliber. According to Jon Speed book, the serial number tells that this rifle was made in 1914, three first digits are 814xx.
Bluing is allmost perfect, only some small detritions. One interesting detail is on the upperside of the bolts arm. There is a small and cute arch cut just there where the arm reach the scope when bolt is open. It looks like it was done when mounting the scope.

I try to take fotos in this weekend....
