Brno U/O Doubles
      #20813 - 11/11/04 06:21 PM

For a year or two in the '80's Brno U/O doubles were available in Oz - two grades, 7x75, 9.3x74R and 375 H&H Belted Magnum calibre. Came with an East German Zeiss scope with QD rail mounts.

I often see these at gun shows at very reasonable prices. Does anyone have any experience with these rifles? Comments on regulation, reliability etc.

I have heard they are OK for what they are.

They seem to have stayed the same price for years but I think it could be
a way of getting into a low cost doubl in both light an medium calibres.

You tend to see more 375H&H's around but if I was going to get one
I would get a 9.3x74R or a 7x65R (which I think you called a 7x75).

7 x 65R is a great "LIGHT" calibre and perfect for Aust Pig hunting.

Can I ask what sort of prices they are asking for them? PM me if you wish.

I think a 7mm one would be quite nice.

I had one a few years ago in .375H&H sold it for $3500. The price on these rifles I have seen are between $3000 and $4000 they are good value and never had a problem with the rifle .

500Nitro - yep, I meant 7x65R - I'm 7 days post op and typing lying in bed.

Nitrox - the 7x65R's seem to turn up most often in Sydney - usually at less than $A3,000.

AuusieMike,

Hope your recovering well and will soon be well enough to
have cold, blue steel in your hands and the smell of cordite
in your face soon.

ANy of the Brno's for around A$3000 - 3500 is good value.

I have seen Scope Rifles go for around the above price.

I think they are under valued, maybe because sometimes they can be on
the heavy side if people put too havy a scope on them.

500Nitro and RLI - do they seem to be reasonably well regulated?

"Cold blue steel and the smell of cordite" - well, I have a target on the house paddock fence I can shoot at from bed, but not the 470 - even the blast from a 26" 303 is hard on the wall hangings.

AussieMike,

To be honest with you, I have only ever shot one and that was for someone who
wanted me to go down the range 4 years ago and test it for them - 375H&H version.

From memory it shot fine - the guy bought it from whoever he was buying it from
so it couldn't have been that bad !!!

Interestingly, you don't see that many of them around in gun shops - they sometimes
turn up at gun shows and Auctions, particulalry in 375H&H.

Someone else might have more experience.

Actually does anyone know what scope mounts fit the Brno CZ double rifles. I was asked about this a couple weeks or so ago and mentioned I would ask on NE.com for them.

I have a photograph of the integral grooves and will post it when I connect my camera.

For the curious I found this link to a BRNO in 7x57R offered for sale.

http://www.gunsamerica.com/guns/976470604.htm

It's not my gun, and I know nothing about it. Just saw the listing and thought I would post it for info.

Regards,

The Brno Doubles I've seen in Oz have a similar action to the one pictured on GunsAmerica but have a solid rib between the barrels.

Saw A Brno 375 double today at the Sydney gun show (Burton's) - some "Tyrolean" stock carving, no scope, metal good 375 H&H Belted for $2,200.

The seller told me that they were regulated for the 235gn load (although I've seen a 375 H&H test target stating that is was shot using 305g RWS).

Interesting, for the money.

I purchased a pair of these "Super Express" back in '82, one in 9.3X74 and the other in .375. Both shot to point of aim well and it wasn't too much problem to work up handloads that would shoot under 2" at 100M. In my own opinion, they're great "working" rifles, never had a problem with either of them. The only mounts I could find were directly from BRNO, and it took about a year then .....I have heard that someone makes another mount that is okay. They are solid rifles, just not quite the balance of a good English, but definitely good value for their purpose. Still have them, and should use them more often, but I've graduated!
