Before I start another all out war regarding the 45-70,
It was a joke and a reference to some post / arguments on AR forum and others
about the 45-70 as a DG Cartridge.

I personally don't care for it but know what it is capable of in the right hands
- just like any cartridge.

Deant

Thanks for the link. I do intend to put the photos up here. Thanks.

I did put up some photos for a vintage American double .45/70 or similar once before. Hopefully not the same one.

She isnt as nice as them old English doubles, but the thought of a cowboy armed with a double rifle facing a charging bear or bison is a different picture than we are used to. Too bad it wasnt a 45/110 or a 50/140.
You are right I think I remember that other rifle wasnt it a winchester?

500 Nitro,

In America the 45-70 is the most assesable big bore because of the cheap marlin lever action rifles. And, because of the new P+ factory loads, it has had a huge rise in popularity recently. There are folks who would never consider anything larger than a 30-30 now shooting big bore rifles. That can't bad.

bonanza,

Anything that gets more people using Big Bores / bigger calibres is good.
I'm just not a personal fan of the calibre.

Can the Marlin Lever action take the pressure of the +P loads (over a long term ?)

The answer is no. The locking mortices in the receiver will peen out of shape in no time depending on how many rounds are put down the tube. I had an older Marlin circa '72 that had this happen to me with around 3000 rounds of Ol' Elmer's load. I thought that it was just getting sour when I decided to convert it to a 475 JDJ which is a 4570 case blown out to 476. The smith at JD Jones' called me and asked me what I had shot in it since the mortices were badly peened and had to me redone before the conversion.

Regardless of the dispariging remarks concerning the 45-70 cartridge for dangerous game, the rifle you post is the 1867 Colt double rifle. It is a very rare bird to say the least. At the time of it's introduction, the 45-70 was as good as anything for the dangerous game here in North America, being only the large brown, and polar bears. Even today it is, with porper loads, as good as anything for those bears, in close quarters! The double chambered for 45-70 is no more silly than all the other replicas of the old Sharps rifles. They all have their place in the shooting comunity, as long as they are used within their capabilities, and legalities! I wouldn't use it on Cape Buffalo, or the Aussie water buffalo, if I had a choice.

I think, however, the posting was only to state the double was made in the USA long ago. The Pedersoli double is the replica of the 1867 Colt double rifle, that was comissioned by Col. Pawasnic of "Trail Guns Armory", a company who imported replicas. There is a "One off" that is for sale at Champlin's, serial numbered "MIKE 001"! This is a special one made for Mike Powasnic, and has a seperate pair of 20 ga shot barrels, and is cased. Regardless whether you like the 45-70 or not that rifle is a collector's piece, because of it's ONE OFF nature.

It would be interesting to know which bullet it was regulated for: certainly not our 30o grain holow points.

There used to be a standard 500 grain bullet load for the 45/70 I believe.
