Cigars for all!
      #207558 - 23/04/12 07:28 AM

Well... not quite yet. Sometime back I sent a CZ Bobwhite 12 ga. to J White Gunsmithing for conversion to 45-120-3.25. The plan is to regulate for 480 gr at about 2100 fps. Jim machined a new monoblock so I should still have the old 12 ga. tubes/block. I received an e-mail from Jim last week stating that he should be shipping the finished product in a week or so. Needless to say, I am excited at the prospect of finally owning and shooting a double.

Let me be the first to congratulate you! And, as the official forum pesterer for pictures, I must start requesting pics right now.

I've seen Jim's website and videos and your rifle will be lovely. Congratulations again, and good hunting!

Once it is in my dirty, little paws I will get some pics to post.

This is harder than trying to go to bed on Christmas Eve.

Man, I guess if you have a DR people's expectations of you become a little higher. I was thinking about a box of Swisher Sweets or maybe White Owls that we could pass around.

Looks like the rain has put a damper on things in Maine. Dammit! Why did they have to move Christmas!

Congratulations on the DR, Mauser.

I'm seeing H4895 producing 2,012 with 405gr. Lead at 28,300CUP/PSI and 1,809fps with 60.0gr. H4895 at 28,500CUP/psi.

We know from experience the pressures can rise quite quickly in the shorter cases, but you have length and capacity going for you. I don't think the 3 1/4" Sharps case has as much capacity as the .450 Nitro case, though. When iterpolating charges from Nitro data, perhaps one must be careful due to the Sharp's case's lower capacity. Perhaps a slower powder is in order, such as 4350 or 4831.

Thanks for the info Daryl.

Jim has made a few of these before mine came along so I am relying on his load data/experience. Rest assured, when I get any info and finally have the chance to take some pictures they will be posted here.

Question for all. I was originally thinking about using the Hornady 480 gr DGX/DGS for regulation, punching paper and hopefully taking hogs. I believe the CEB's are available in 480 gr as well. Jim was looking at 450 gr as he couldn't find many 480 grainers out there. I have seen Barnes Banded Solids in 450 gr. but I believe production is still in hiatus pending BATFE workings. Are there other reasonable (read inexpensive) 450 gr bullets out there that I can use for paper punching or less demanding tasks?

I thought the problem with Barnes was with the pointed solids - which in itself is ridiculous.

Here's s link to an update on the Barnes page. It appears that banded solids are available in loaded ammunition.
http://www.barnesbullets.com/wp-content/...lids-2012-2.pdf

An interesting excerpt from the update:
**Please note the Banded Solids components and VOR-TX Safari ammunition products loaded with Banded
Solids not included in the aforementioned calibers (e.g. 416, 470 and 500) and TSX bullets are
not subject to the current armor piercing classification and continue to be available for purchase**

These are the aforementioned calibers.

**As of today’s date, ATF has not ruled on any of the petitions requesting the removal of the Banded Solid projectiles from the statutory definition of armor piercing ammunition. Accordingly, the following eleven Banded Solid projectiles (currently listed in the 2012 Barnes Catalog) are subject to exemption requests that are pending with ATF. Please note that Barnes is not pursuing an exemption for the .223 caliber Banded Solid projectile at this time. The .223 caliber Banded Solids are not listed in the 2012 Barnes catalog or on the Barnes website**

25 Cal
243 Cal
264 Cal
270 Cal
284 Cal
308 Cal
338 Cal
375 Cal
410 Cal
458 Cal (45-70)
458 SOCOM

These calibers are still in the lurch. The text doesn't appear to differentiate between RN or pointed.

A more recent update indicates that the banded solids are available in a few more calibers as loaded ammo but not components:

**Barnes Banded Solids are now available loaded in new VOR-TX Safari Ammunition. 375 H&H and 458 Winchester Magnum TSX and Banded Solid RN available in June, 2011. Other Safari calibers to become available through September. **

Wow! That's .450NE ballistics. A pretty hefty round for a converted shotgun. Wear your safety glasses!

I think we are now looking at 450 gr at 2000+ fps. Don't have any load data from Jim yet.

The supply of Barnes .458 - 450 gr. RN banded solids has completely dried up. I haven't been able to find them anywhere other than available for back order.

Just received and update from Jim. He has started some range work and has the L-R spread down to 3 or so inches at 50 yards. 3/4" vertical stringing. He is fine tuning his loads to try and close the gap. Also received two photos but will have to find a site to host them before I can post them here. He hopes to ship on Tuesday.

The weather has caused a bit of a delay in the final test firing but Jim is expecting to ship it before the end of the week.

Very, very nice! Like the all business and little embellishment style - should be great on Texas hogs and Nilgai! Do keep the pictures coming, and good hunting!

How much does it weigh?

Neat to see it with a straight wrist, should handle pretty fast.
I like a double rifle with a straight wrist.

Tinker,

I don't know the final weight yet. When I get the rifle I plan to weight it, get some basic measurements and several pictures to post here. I have some work travel and vacation coming up but I hope to get to the range and post some targets as well before my extended absence. I would like to chrony some of the loads as well but we'll have to see how that goes. My chronograph has been locked away in the safe literally, for years.

Jim is still working up the final load but has been hampered by the weather up there. The latest projection is to ship this week.
