Went shooting with a pro roo shooter here last night for a bit of fun. Have not boxed a roo for nearly 10 years and can't believe I thought it was "fun" again because when I finnished roo shooting I didn't fire a shot for two years as I was sick of it.
Thought I should true my little 6-223 up so not to make a fool of myself. Went out to my range yesterday arvo and shot this group before shifting the scope 4 clicks to the right. The shot on it's own was the first shot on a clean barrel.
 By fatboy404 at 2012-04-17
My 6-223 was a worn out 17 Rem that I paid $250 for. Took the varnish off as well as the cheek piece and oil finnished it. Screwed a 24" Dougless barrel into it and away I went. Had some trouble with it but Tony Small (Afro408) recut the chamber and you see how it shoots now.

we shot until 10 o'clock and ended up with 25 roo's and I head shot 4 pigs but only 2 went box weight. Around $500 for the 1/2 night.

6mm-223 is a ripper calibre.
$500 for 1/2 the night - less expenses, etc etc !!!

Well done mate. Do you get time to sleep?? What with all the hunting, sowing, spraying, 'roo shooting and fishing, that you get up to?

6x47- interesting. That one sure shoots well - about as well as the best light varmint 6x47's back in the mid 70's. Nice to have, for sure - seems almost too easy when they shoot like that.
I have 75gr. Hornady HP's loaded for my .25/06 at about 3,650fps, not max but moving OK just the same. I'm quite happy with just under 1/2" now - factory light-weight Savage cheap stainless Axis. Now would be nice to head shoot some pigs with them, or roos, but was planning on smacking some wolves instead.
Always nice to hear about your exploits, Neale.

6x47 is what it is normally referred to here.

No it's not. A 6-223 or 6x45 as it is also known is just a 223 necked up to 243. A 6x47 is a 222 mag necked up to 243.

It is nice to feel a little bump on the shoulder when you pull the trigger and see that the group has not gotten any larger.
One of the boars last night was about 140 yards away and wouldn't look at the light and kept trotting. My mate beeped the horn, he propped and he showed me about 2" of his neck and that's where the 70 grain TNT hit.

Ha, most of my shooting is for human consumption or the dogs. Not the same numbers by any means, just the household.
I reckon I saw a couple of red roos this week on sunset. Looked big enough but it may have been a red tinge from the sunset. Usually only grays and euros here, but reds rarely during dry periods. It has been very dry now for two months so they come off the plains into the hills during drought times. No permits or tags though.
Neale, with all your calibres I reckon you must have a well organised reloading room/set up.

I have a very simple setup now.
I don't have that many rifles really. I just use them all a lot.
A little list for you.
458wm,404j,375H&H,9.3x62(x 2),338-06,8x68s,6-223 and a 22LR. Bit of a gap between 6-223 and 8x68 atm.
Thinking of building a 6.5 Creedmoor ?.

I reckon you could squeeze both a 6.5x47Lap and a 280Imp into that gap.

Nice shooting, Neale! I did a night of that once with a pro out Nyngan way. That was the first time I shot pigs - three of them in the head with the pro's .22-250 (he was surprised that a university student could shoot!).
6-.223 - that's a new one to me! I think you need something starting with .5 in the collection, Neale... canetoad medicine.

Market hunting has always interested me.
Looks like "Roo tail soup" could be a new delicacy. Bet they're tough as shoe leather though. Do they get chopped for testing or keeping tally or something or just discarded?

Yeah - sorta 6x45,- it's close BUT it should be the 6x46 as the 6mm. on a .222 was and still is the original 6x45 and the 6mm. on the .222 mag. case is and always was the 6x47 - so the .223 should be the 6x45.5 or 6x46 - shouldn't it? The guess the mag. case is .009" longer than the .223 which is .006" longer than the .222.
Afterall, the .222 and the .223 are both .224's so there is some leeway but to differenciate the .222 base case from the .223 and .222 mag. case, would be to call the 6mm on the .223 case, the 6x46mm - at least here.

Kangaroo cooked correctly is beautiful (as long as it's not an old buck !!!).
A steak cooked badly tastes feels like leather but so does any other meat !
Stews are always good.

I have kangaroo about every week or so. Not tough at all. Don't over cook it as it is a lean game meat.

It is more simple than that.
The buyers don't want the tail as they have to pay for it and there is no meat in what we cut off.
They also "stack" better without the tail.

Here, the 6mm 222 Rem is called a 6mm Myra (Tony Small) has a reamer and shoots with one.
Not sure about the exact measuremnts, I just load it with Forster 6x45 dies and a custom neck die made by 450Ackley.

I had Kangaroo burgers once, at an Radio Control aeroplane pattern flying contest - the burgers were just fine - good actually and just barely, almost cooked through - everyone liked them.
.222 ctg. length is 1.70", .223 is 1.76" and the .222 mag is 1.85".
Here, in around 1970, the 6mm X .222 came out as the 6x45mm, a wildcat Sporter round. As I understand it, the sporter bore size had to be .240" minimum, which already eliminated the .234's that Ackley had been working on in the 50's and 60's and it also to have a case capacity of a .222 or greater - something like that.
McCracken custom bullets were quite popular with the 6x45 shooters here in B.C. The 70gr. McCrackens were extreemly accurate in my 6mm Rem. with 38.0gr. 3031 - amazingly so, with consistant 5 shot groups like the blackened hole in this target of Neale's. Nosler match bullets on the other had make .5" groups with the fouling shots - 1st of 6 always on the same bull. The consistancy of the fouler, was amazing - I used a 6 bull target so the top left was always the fouling target & I could shoot 5 bull aggs on the single page target.
