Barra Today
      #207250 - 17/04/12 03:29 PM

Went for a quick look at a lagoon today, brother had been getting some nice barra. Got a dozen fish, had some problems landing the bigger one's and keeping them out of the lillies, I was by myself so not the best pics. Best fish was 97cm and a 87cm which another boat watched me land, they took a photo for me.
Colour change where the smaller creek ran into the lagoon. Had the fish feeding on the colour change . Heres some pics Mick
87cm
71cm
Guy's who took the pic

That is a nice fish. The fins and tail show it is probably a good scrapper.

Thanks for the tip Mike Bailey. Found their website and this looks like something right up my alley. What time of year would be best for barra?

JIM A - The run off is typicaly classed as the best fishing. This is after the wet season has peaked and water is starting to run off the floodplains , back into the rivers. The timing varies depending on the wet seasons length and amount of rain that we have for the season. A good guestamate is April May. The lagoon or billabongs tend to fire up around Sept, and can be great fishing. Also around Sept Oct the river mouths and coastal areas can produce big breeders.
The lagoon fish tend to be a darker or golden colour with the tail being dark compared to a salt water fish which has a yellow tail and are silver. Although both colours can be caught in the fresh or salt areas, depending on the season. Wet or dry.
The run off if timed right is awesome fishing with both saltwater and lagoon fish being taken. The saltwater fsh push up with the tides and fight a lot harder than the lagoon fish. The fight is vary good with solid runs, head shakes and leaping from the water. In areas where there are a lot of trees or snags the barra will wrap you up and bust you off vary quickly.
Barra are targeted with live bait, lures, rubbers and are spectacular on fly.
the holy grail these days is a fish of a metre.
As far as eating goes they are rated as very good with the saltwater fish being the better tasting. I would rather eat a saltwater reef fish or jewie.
If you are coming over let me know and Ill take you out for a trip.heres some more pics. Mick

Those photos show the difference between
the Sea and Fresh water barra so well in
terms of the colour.

That 117cm one is a rippa size.

Top photos. Good to see someone else doesn't mind going out in inclement weather.

Yes, sure do.

FYI, Patsy reckons I am the worst fisherman out there !!!

She will throw in and pull one in every 2 - 3 throws,
me, I'm lucky to get one or two unless we have a really
good run !!!

I might need to get some tips off you when I am up there !

Jim A, from memory I went in Aug or Sept, 7 days fishing and a ten day buff hunt. As I said earlier, best light tackle fishing place I´ve been to. Folks there very friendly, guide hilarious and good, we only paid for dinner the night we arrived, the next 6 days they just cooked what we caught so no bill ! (mind you, we hammered the wine and bar a fair bit). If my kids were grown up I´d live there 2 months a year, best, Mike
