Don't laugh - I have an idea

High energy assault rifle.

A militarize searcy 500 NE double rifle with armor peircing .50 cal bullets.

Could be used to take out transformers, generators, cars, heavy duty locks, armor, anything the 7.62 won't.

Think about the advantage: super compact and very reliable. Much easier to carry that the Barret. Each Platoon could have one.

Twist my arm ;-)

But wouldn't that be an "up close and personal" weapon? Would you want to be that close to a transformer or generator when you threw some lead into it?

No more so than a pump shotgun.

With an aimpoint "scope" it could be useful out to 100y, but more likely 50.

This idea came to me when I heard about the development of shoulder fired 50 BMGs. There aready is a shoulder fired 50, its called the 500 NE!

But, why not bring back and old stand-by, the coachgun; but in the form of a high energy rifle assault rifle.

thats not realy new, hear a story that some brits bringing their big doubles to france in ww1 and shot with this against german protective shields. this was a movable steel shield strong enough for standard rifle bullets.

And Holland & Holland made a Shotgun called the Zepellin gun for taking out
Airships.

You are correct - they did use Heavy Double rifles during WWII to get rid of the
protective armour protecting snipers.

Wasn't the 55 Boys rifle cartridge derived from a sporting cartridge design?

the 55 boys is so close to the 50bmg case (If you forget the belt, this is only for headspace because the 55 boys havn't such a clear shoulder like the 50bmg) that I thing the bmg case was the mother case. in all the old ww1 13,2x92SR is the mother or better say the model of all anti tank cartridges. Brouwning work first time with the mauser anti tank rifle and this cartridge and than double the dimensions of the 30 06 cartridge. but test with the 50 bmg was done in rebarreled mauser anti tank guns.
