Holland & Holland Royal 500/465 NE
      #207154 - 16/04/12 08:21 AM

Here's a pic of my H&H Royal 500/465 NE in the Caprivi. It's a circa 1908 double in prisitine condition.
I carry it through the thick stuff & try to baby it the best I can. It's a great shooter & has taken two
nice elephant bulls (Namibia & Tanzania). I figure that is what it was made for, not sitting in a safe!

Cowboy

I would assume yhat would be one of the
first / earliest 465's made being 1908.

I believe this caliber was introduced in 1906, so this would certainly be one of H&H's early 500/465
Royals. Many of the early ones were Dominion Grade Sidelocks. This specific rifle was made
for the Marquis de Peneranda & was part of a 2 gun set. I am trying to get some more info
from H&H. I would love to find out what the #1 rifle was?

Nigel, by the way, my first elephant was taken with the 450/400 Charles Lancaster double
you sold me about 7-8 yrs ago. Had this H&H not come available, I would have been perfectly
happy continuing my hunting career with that rifle. (see pic below)

Cowboy

After I typed my last post, I realised who it was and did a quick check of your profile.

I remember you sending me that and the other photos after your trip.

If I remember correctly, you got really good service from the freight manager and took him to a baseball game or something along those lines.

I must see if the Lancaster is still for sale. Haven't check for a while.

Anyway, good to see you are enjoying the H&H - I think it was a good move on your part.

Re the date / early gun, when did H&H go to the bolstered action ? Anyone know an exact date ?

Nice!
Do you have any other photos of the rifle?
Good details on muzzles, sights, engraving etc would be great!

Cheers

I agree. I took my earlier 1896 H&H double to Africa last September and shot three plains game. It came back with more scratches and was a bit dirty from crawling on the ground, but I would not have dreamed of hunting with anything else.

Congratulation.

cowboy,

Your Lancaster experience is pretty awesome as well. The pictures are great. Nice ivory on the later guy, can't see as well on your H&H kill.

Classic set-up. True gunbuffs will end up with a doublerifle sooner or later.
Thanks for sharing

For some reason I think 1924 for introduction of H&H bolstered actions.

But that may not be a correct reason!

RockDoc

I have a hazy memory it was earlier than 1921
and post 1915.

I also have a hazy recollection that it was around the
375 Flanged Magnum era.

Anyone else help ?

I looked at the two 500/465's Holt's had, latest 1922 and not bolstered.

Cheers,
Chris

Cowboy,

Did you double tap that jumbo or did you reload after the first shot?

My Wildebeest ran after the first shot (hit) so I quickly reloaded the right bbl for the stalk.

When I got to him I missed the first shot and took him with the second (left) bbl without so much as two seconds between shots.

Thanks everyone for the comments

Bonanza:
The second elephant pictured was shot with the 450/400 Lancaster, I hit him a bit forward on a quartering
away brain shot. He started to go down, stumbled but got upright, so myself & my PH put a couple of more
rounds in his chest. He then went down, only taking a couple of steps.

The first elephant pictured with my H&H was a side brain shot & went right down on the first shot. I much
prefer this scenario! There is definitely a learning curve to elephant hunting.

Congrats on adding some history & character to your H&H as well

Very nice rifle. Looks like it has a third bite. Of course it should be used, it was made to be shot. It still has another hundred years left in it.

More than that.

Another 500 years if well cared for and then re barrel it.

Maybe, but by then you'll need to determine its age by carbon dating.

Yep.

Every gun made before 1940'ish has no radioactivity in it
so that will always be a good clue !!! LOL
