Merkel 140.1 Front Sight
      #20661 - 09/11/04 01:34 AM

Gentlepeople:

I had my Merkel .500 NE out this weekend and popped a few rounds off. It's post peak folliage here in Virginia and much of the bushes/trees/grasses are in the amber color. When I was shooting this monster I couldn't help but realize that the front sight was a gold color. This being the first time I ever shot this during this time of the year, it took me longer than I though to get a sight profile becuase the front sight was blending in with the background.

As I was driving back home, I realized that from everything I've seen in African pictures (Haven't actually hunted there YET, but will soon!) the grasses/trees/etc also have that golden hue to it.

I'm wondering if I'm in Africa with this weapon I'll have the same issues with the front sight blending in with the background.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is so, is it a problem for you? Have you improvised the front sight in any way?

Clark,

The Merkel front sight is awesome except that gold color. It's stout as hell, but hard to see. I bought some white sight paint at my gun dealer. Works great!

BTW - We need arrange a SE double rifle shoot some time. There are loads of owners in Ga,SC,NC,Va,Te. I can probably arrange a sunday "match" where we can get 25 positions for the day. I'll post a message later to all SE shooters and see what kind of response there is.

Bonanza:

I agree with you about the build of the sight, but that color, man, I was loosing sight picture each time I shouldered the rifle. I will have to get something to change the color. But before I do anything, as always, I check with you experts!

Thanks for the info.

Regarding the shoot, that sounds like a WONDERFUL idea to me. I have a newborn at home (seven weeks) so it's hard to get away for anytime right now. But hopefully after the holidays my family will get into a routine and I'll be able to go out and play!

Please keep me in the loop if you plan anything!

Regards,

I agree - the Merkel front sights are very strong / sturdy

I find the gold colour is not the problem - the sight is at the wrong angle.

I file ALL of my front sights at a 30 - 40 degree angle.

This SEEMS to catch the sunlight regardless of where the sun is
AT THE SAME TIME AS GIVING A CONSISTENT SIGHT PICTURE.

This is important as the POI changes if the front sight catches the light
a different way at diffeent time of the day.

I had (still have it) a WR 318 Bolt action that shot to a different POI on the target
in the morning and evening SOLELY because of the way the light reflected from the
foresight. That was until I fixed it up as per above.

The alternative is to get a gunsmith to insert a very small diamond in the front sight
This works really well and again gives a consistent sight picture.

Hope this helps.
