Chapuis Popularity.....is it the French ?
      #205987 - 26/03/12 02:06 PM

My question is why aren't Chapuis DR's much more popular among DR shooters in the States? Is it marketing that makes Heym Merkle or Kreighoff so much more popular or is it the image and reputation of the well built German machine? George Caswell of Champlin Arms USA ( an authority and leading dealer in DR's) says he has shot all current Doubles and defies anyone to show him a better made gun and a better value than Chapuis.... period. Not only are they fine guns but I believe they are a much nicer and classier looking gun than most German guns. But what really matters is accuracy. And with my Chapuis PH2 470 NE will print with the best of them and there are also a few Buff and a couple of Elephants that will attest to that as well !!!

I don't know that they are at all unpopular.
I've seen a few substantial group-buy arrangements where fairly good sized mobs of American hunters got together on Chapuis purchases.

It's good that you like yours.
Can you post some photos..?

I reckon they would sell more if they paid for advertising on forums!

I've owned both a Merkel DR and a Chapius DR.

Here are my observations.

Merkel: I liked the classic Anson-Deely action and splintered for-end. Accuracy was excellent as the fit and finish fine. I liked the ambidextrous stock. I found the wrist way to thin and the plastic butt a joke. Triggers were not quite there for 10k rifle. I'll give it a 7.5 out of 10

Chapuis: I liked the lock-up. I found the stock to be be terrible. Too much like a shotgun and not a DR. The for-end was the worst I could imagine, it's huge. Finish was sub-par for a 10K rifle. I'll give it a 7.0 out of 10.

I say this because these rifles are just plain, basic and are killed by quality bolt actions at 1/2 the price.

Yes but by the time you jack another shell into your bolt rifle, you might be the red stuff between an Elephants toes

My Chapuis,9.3X74R is one heck of a value compare to some other rifles. It's a touch too light but it works and is accurate. Other Chapuis 9.3's up here are just as good.
I haven't held other larger Chapuis so I can't comment on them

Or you could have a group of pissed off cows coming at you within 12 yards with a double in hand.
The PH was happy to have his Brno 416 with its high capacity when this went down;

This comment from an avid double user.
With Chapuis, a good friend of mine has two high grade ones in 9.3 and 470. Both beautiful. But I find its a pity they have such a massive club like fore end.

Why complain about the for end. You can slim it down to whatever size you want. Several people hear and on other forums have done exactly that.
